Man I am pissed. I had a guy (Bob Tyndall) come look at my boat twice, shake my hand and say "we have a deal". Of course the guy gets wishy washy and bails out on the deal because he says he can get a new one for the same price. Well I guess if 10-15,000 more is the same price, I agree.
What a f-n douche bag.
Just had to rant. I actually have been getting back in touch with some people that wanted it, but I put them off because this asshole had me so convinced he was buying it. F-N time waster.
BTW, if someone comes and looks and says they will think about it I am totally ok with that. But when you shake someones hand and say "we have a deal", that pisses me off.
The guy has tons of money, and showed up at my house in a fricken 07 Escalade then a GT500. He said he has a Ford GT as well. He wanted this thing for a house up in Utah for his kids to use.

Well it just pisses me off. I have had a few people talk to me about my boat. They never say "we have a deal". They need to think about it, or "I need to talk to the wife", or they need to get financing.
Don't tell me "we have a deal" and shake my hand with a hearty grip and then flake. I honestly don't know how someone can do that to someone.
The boat was on EBAY. He said that if it doesn't sell, he would buy it for a negotiated price (and a good one at that).
It is just sad that people don't stand behind their word or handshake.
What is this world coming too?

LIke I said. I understand people saying "I have to think about it". I am in sales. I hear that same crap everyday. Don't FOCKING shake my hand and say "we have a deal" if you don't mean it.
Lucky for me, I may have a buyer in Havi. I am bringing it down there this weekend. I am not expecting anything to happen, but if it does, all the better. At least the person was up front with me that they may not be able to afford it.

Nothing I hate worse than the "Let me ask my wife" line you get when someone comes over to check out whatever your selling. For god sakes, ask your wife before you come over and waste my time. Now whenever I am selling something, I always put "Ask your wife before you call me" in the ad.

Sorry for your grief, what a hassle. Everything I've sold I ALWAYS take a back up offer or two. If the deal starts heading south I'm calling #2, 3 and 4.
Good luck, selling stuff private party is a hassle, but sometimes it works out better for everyone.

Honestly, I get this crap all day at work, but it doesn't bother me here. This douche was bragging about all his money and how it would be CASH, etc, etc.
The guy wouldn't shut the f0ck up either. He would ask me a question about the boat than interupt me and answer it himself.
BTW, he says he is best friends with Bob Leach (I don't even think he knew Bob Leach's last name). He said Bob would sell him a 23 foot with a 496HO for 60k brand new...Yeah right, and he wouldn't even have to wait, that Bob would put him ahead of everyone. Well, why the Fock is he looking at my Lightning with a 6.2 if he can get an Elim with a 496HO for 60k or less? What a retard.

A few months back I had an ad in the spam section selling my 06 Trailblazer SS. A Hot Boat member FLATMVN (Louis) PM'd me, he said he wanted to see the car the next Sun. I gave him directions and my home phone #. Sunday came and I hadn't heard from him and then my phone rings and it's him sayin he's around the corner. He drove the car, liked it, we discussed a price and we agreed. He offered to give me deposit but I could tell from talking to Louis he was a man of his word so I told him it wasn't necesary. We set a date for him to come back and go to the bank. 10 days later, he showed, we we to the bank and he had the cash in a banker's bag.
There are still plenty of honest straight shooters out the and FLATMVN (Louis) is one of them.
Sorry you ended up with an a**hole.
John M
BTW, In these types of sales, a deposit does little to secure the sale. If the buyer changes his mind, generally he/she will walk away from a deposit. To protect myself, I NEVER tell any potentiel buyer the the stuff is defintately sold, until I have the cash. However, I will not sell it until the hand shake deal, is history.

Shouldn't have to rely on the one guy that said he wanted it.

I had a problem with the seller of my boat trying to sideways the deal.
I just hat it when a seller gets a "magic phone call" with a verbal offer for more than the asking price after I drive a freaking hour to buy the thing.
I got freaking mad and he backed down and let the deal happen.
Fawkin people I tell ya....
On the flip side, about a year ago we sold our 01 Durango with an add in the SUV trader. I was priced just average and did my research.
Many tire kicking calls then this one guy calls, ends up he lives a city away, shows up on time, drives the car, offers me $250 less than I was asking to split the cost of tires. He was right it needed them. Wrote me a personal check and said he would pick up the car and sign a bill of sale after his check cleared.
Check cleared in a week, he showed up on time...drove away. WOW. I will never forget that transaction. It can still happen Mr. Retriever.

I have had buyers get bent all the way out of shape for me requiring a 10% deposite placed in my trust account and signed contract before I even pick up the phone to a seller. I does not mean that all buyers will not finish a deal, it just means that everyones time is equally important and starting a deal with a deposit only leaves 90% to go.
Sorry to hear about your bad deal, I hope to read you have much better luck in the very near future.

With everything I sell, the first one with a deposit gets first crack at it.
I used to do the handshake thing until I got burned a few times. Now, I am very upfront when selling. Deposit holds it, other than that it is open to buy until a contract and deposit is given.

They are out there. When I bought Toby's boat I PM'd him on a Saturday, we went back and forth for a couple days, on the following Thursday I had a cashier's check paid in full in his hand and that Saturday we LOOKED at/drove the boat. I won't start the negociation unless I have the cash in hand. My time is valuable, so is the other person's. Again, I feel for you, it's a hassle! I had a seller call me two hours before the test ride we setup a week earlier ( give or take a few days) and cancel telling me he changed his mind. He asked if I was approved when we setup the test ride and I told him I was and the bank and insurance people were just waiting for my call. The finance company and insurance had all the details about the boat, I just had to give the go ahead. I was real excited, but was crushed the morning I got that call. Well, I went with the next best deal and that is how I ended up with my current boat.

Beaver, I know what you mean. I grew up watching Dad make deals all the time. Handshake and whatever verbage. When he shook someone's hand on a deal, it was as good as done. He would never go back on a handshake and always told me that it was how the world should always operate. When man shakes another man's hand, it is a binding promise. If you don't mean it or can't do it, don't shake hands.
One thing I will offer, that may help, is "it's not over 'till it's over". NEVER count on a deal being done until you have the money and the papers are signed. When I am selling something these days, I always figure the person or people are not coming back. Even WITH a deposit, it's not over. They can say whatever and forfeit their deposit and you still have the boat (and some of their money). I have seen several escrow deals drop through where the people were saying "we sold our house today". Only to see them a year later in the same house.
This day and age with most people the way they are, I just figure it's NOT done. Then, if they come through on their end, it feels like a bonus when the deal is complete.
Sorry again that you got jerked around.
Good luck.

For a second, I thought you were a realtor. We get this kind of stuff all day long from both buyers and sellers. There's good people out there, but many, many, many with little to no true integrity. Buyers always say they can afford way more than they actually turn out to be qualified for. That's why we screen them well. Then sellers, many times will not tell you their true intentions, and many times end up working against you, costing you time and money.
One of my best friends is SB deputy sheriff, who used to be a realtor. One day, I told him it must be tough being LE at dealing with the worst of people everyday. He said, he saw it not much worse than the non-sense he saw while working as a realtor. Go figure. Of course, I don't deal with murders, and crash victims, etc, so, I suppose he might have been exaggerating just a bit. :D
