I have an msd 6al ignition box that was mounted to the rear of my back seat. Ive already fried one box from it getting wet splashing etc. I wanted to move my new box somewhere in the boat where it cant get wet. Is there anything wrong with having the box too far from the motor? I was told no farther than three feet from the motor. Whats the best place to mount them?

What about up high on the transom??

WOT, I did exactly like MudPumper said. Mounted in up high on the inside up the transom underneath the deck. To date never been wet and works like a champ (now I've done it. Bound to take a dump now.)

I wonder, do 2 fried 6AL boxes still cost less than 1 6M box?

My msd is mounted up under the dash and have never had one problem with it. We run a digital 7 programable on the dragster and it is mounted under the cowling wich is 5 feet from the engine and no problems there eithor.

6AL can be repaired, 6M cannot.
6AL has a rev limiter, 6m requires a separate limiter.
Both of those things also add up to $$$ advantage to 6AL for some.....
Unless you "drown" it, the 6AL can be used in a "damp" environment with no problems. Just dont put it where it is constantly subjected to large amounts of water.

Mine has been mounted behind the engine cover for years and no problem. They can take some moisture. They are mounted under the hood of a car which is prone to moisture, for example when it rains.

I have had my 6A for 3 years now, never a problem. I mounted mine high on the transome but first I drilled out the rivets on the backing plate and sealed it.

Current Summit Catologue.
6AL box, $236.88 X 2 = $473.76
6M-2 box $283.88
6M-2 box PLUS rev limiter $427.76
6M-2 box with rev limiter built in $398.88 (It's new, just found in the catologue checking before I posted) Summit part # MSD-6560
If I ever add a box to my pro billet marine distrib, it'll be the 6M, and the only reason I have for a box, is the rev limiter.

Just go with the digital 6 plus. Its potted also and comes with better bells & whistles.

But it isn't 6AL X 2. It is 6AL x 1 + 1 repair. :)
You aren't likely to kill one of the 6AL unless it is mounted where you end up drowning it OR it died due to poor wiring connections(specifically a POOR ground).
It's nice they finally came out with a 6M with built in regulator, but I will stick with my 6AL. Been working fine and staying dry for years...................

I've got a 6AL. Cut a piece of 3/4 plyboard a little bigger than the box. Fiberglassed the board underneath the lip on the transom. Not too high, so you can get to it easily. Then siliconed a piece of 3/16 rubber mat to the box. Screwed the box to the board. Haven't had any problems......

Were you at Martinez this weekend?
If so, I helped swim your boat back to the sand bar and was wondering if you got the boat running. If not, another 6al got splashed and took a crap.

Most all MSD failures are a result of a bad ground, make sure you have a good ground, no paint or anodizing between the grounds.
