View Full Version : My Truck project.....

This is a truck that I have been collecting parts for now for over a year.
I have gutted 4 trucks to get there, but assembly has begun....
Basically what I will end up with is a crew cab, long bed Dodge 4x4 (late 80's type) with a 5.9 Cummins. I am only doing a 4" lift and 33's for now.....
The frame, cab, and front axle are from are from a series of old USAF trucks. The frame is the second heaviest that Dodge ever produced (8" wide channel, 1/4" thick). The front axle is a mil spec Dana 60, which means that all the outer stuff (spindles, u-joints, brakes, etc...) are Dana 70. The rear end is a Dana 70 from my '91 diesel donor truck. I'll post more pics as construction commences....

Ducky- Shoot me a PM. I am the Editor of Street trucks and we have a title called Diesel world that I think will be very interested in this transplant and perhaps the finished project.

You going to run the 12v cummins??? If so which year?

The motor is a 12v rotary pump Cummins (intercooled) out of my '91 truck. The motor was tuned on by Merlon over here at Old School Garage, and the good ole G-tech pro said 272hp to the rear wheels, (138 before we started) and we estimate around 600 #ft of torque. It has an HX35 turbo on it now, but he is going to build me an HX40 hybrid when it goes in the new frame, and I rework my exhaust.

Project looks like fun. I know this is going to hurt, but can I make a suggestion? Dump the 91 motor and get one from a 96-98 12v/5-speed Dodge. Better engine with WAY more power potential. Even the 94-98 autos is a big step up from the old VE rotary pump. I know you'd be happier down the road.

I have a similar project. Got a 78 F250 crew-cab sb, I've had for a long time. Gonna yank the 460 I put in it 8 yrs ago and drop in an 01 HO Cummins I picked up. The Cummins came with a 5sp & xfer case. Also got a set of late model ford axles. Now I just need some time.

I'd love to put a Cummins in a Deuce and a half like this one for $3500! http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=7&f=91&t=441272

If I had to buy a motor, I would buy a P-pump motor, but since I have the VE motor (with only 142k on it) it am stuck with it for the time being. It will get swapped out down the road....... The VE motor does do better on fuel though....

There is a similar truck here in Havasu. It's a late 70's ext cab Ford, short bed, with a P-Stroke in it.....
My friend Merlon has an '89 Suburban with a Cummins and a 6 speed in it, and has built two others for his customers.

I'll take more pics when the trans comes back from Merlon, and we mock up the drivelines. I have been working one the cab too, but I don't want anyone to see my first attempts at sheet metal work.....:jawdrop:

Ducky- I have been thinking about putting a Duramax in my '99 Chevy 2500 which has a small block 350 in it now. What sort of red tape do you have to go through with the smog nazi's since it is basically becoming a bastard vehicle.

Here in Havasu it won't be a big deal because we have no emissions requirements. When the truck is done, they will look under the hood, and mark the paperwork with a "D" for fuel and that will be that. If you live in CA, It is my understanding that you will have to use an engine that is the same model year or newer than the rest of your truck, along with the proper trans, and all the emissions controls that are correct for the engine you use. You would need to check with CARB, but I think if you follow those guidelines, and do a nice, factory looking job on it, they will issue you an exemption order. I don't really think they will give you too much trouble, since the Duramax is a cleaner engine than your current gas motor. If you were trying to swap the other way, I know they wouldn't have it though......

Ducky, lemme know when you are ready for some power upgrades for that mota...I know the guy that still uses our design for the fuel pin and has injectors as well. :)

I am probably going to de-tune this one a little for a while, with the current cost of fuel. The donor truck was a lot of fun to drive, but my heavy right foot tended to cost me at the pump. When the pain of the fuel prices subsides a little, I may do some more work to it though. I think Merlon has a set of 375hp marine injectors that he'd sell me, but I haven't heard of the different designs for the fuel pin. I'd be interested to learn more about that.

We basically designed our own fuel pin and aneriod spring to allow more fuel delivery in the mid-higher RPM ranges, without smoking like a train off the bottom. Softer springs means the aneriod comes in harder when it comes in. Be careful with injectors...the Marine 370's you probably speak of are from the later model engines...there are some differences between the VE motors and P-7100 motors.

I know that the injectors for the P-motors have a much higher snap pressure. The ones he has are supposed to be for the VE pump, although I am not planning on changing them out anyways. I would like to learn more about your fuel pin and aneroid mods though. Mine flows all kinds of fuel on top, but it does smoke like a train on the bottom (sometimes it's fun to fill the car next to you with soot, though...:D ).

Here are pics of my sheet metal repairs. I was pretty critical of them, but they don't look so bad now that they are done...... Will look better with carpet over them though.......

All I really have left is to "massage" the body and paint the exterior, have the seats recovered, and finish the door panels/stereo install. I have been driving the truck, it drives and rides very well, and it's tight and solid, with very minimal noise and rattles. I still have to change the gears in the front axle and have the front drive line made for 4WD to function.
