When I was about 10 we had a railroad tracks that ran right along the end of our street. About a mile and a half up that railroad was a park we liked. We use to jump on the trains passing by and hitch a ride to the park, when it was time to go home we'd hop on a train going the opposite direction.
We did a lot of crazy stuff along those rail road tracks. Putting big rocks on the tracks made a lot of noise when the train ran them over. I put hundreds of pennies and nickels on the tracks in hopes of getting a flattened nickel or penny but they were never on the track after the train passed by.
Looking at it now I realize how satupid and dangerous it all was. But back then it was all just fun and games. Luckily none of us ever lost any limbs.

I did this recently. Fascination with trains doen't stop at 15. I was in Jersey in an area where commuter trains would run back and forth every 15 minutes or so. So I had a couple of quarters in my pocket and wanted to try to flatten one on the next train. The train is coming and I taped it to the track to keep it from bouncing off before it got there. The first wheel ran over it, sliced the tape and made it bounce up. The second wheel collected it in midair batted it about 40 feet down the rail bed. Ting ting ting,it bounced out of sight. I'm glad I was standing behind it. We used to throw artichokes at trains, instant arti-dip. :D

Any of you engineers ever heard of the FTRA?
