Corvette to get diesel power for 2009
Chevrolet has announced that they will introduce a diesel-powered Corvette next spring as a 2009 model. The 2009 Chevrolet Corvette TDI will be powered by a specially-designed 5.7 liter V8 diesel with twin turbochargers. Output for the engine, developed in cooperation with Isuzu, is estimated at 350 horsepower and 675 lb-ft of torque.
"We feel that with its high fuel economy and strong low-end torque characteristics, the turbodiesel is the perfect engine for the Corvette," says a General Motors spokesperson. Early tests indicate that the Corvette TDI accelerates from 0 to 60 in just over 4 seconds and achieves real-world fuel economy of 25 to 30 MPG.
Chevrolet has hinted that if the Corvette TDI is a hit with buyers, they may consider phasing out gasoline-powered Corvettes altogether and making the turbodiesel engine the exclusive powerplant for the iconic American sports car. -- Aaron Gold

Women will love the black sooty cloud that catches up to the car at each intersection when the top is down.
I think it's a good idea to start going diesel but perhaps not in a convertible.

That,s the reason GM is going out of buisness. They can,t get a grip on what people want. Who the hell wants a deisel powered performance car.

Yeah, in reality, a SUB-4 second 0-60 STOCK performance car getting 30+ MPG would really suck. :notam:

Audi ran its diesel power R10 at Sebring, Fla, and is the car to beat in 24 hour of Le Man. No one likes gas burning big block muscle more then I do, my 427 Ford is 47 years old and still running strong. Its a sign of the times boys, you can't beat the torque.

Exactly.
If this is Vette deal is true...GM is way off the mark.
IMHO Vette owners could care less about gas prices.

I totally agree. I think a diesel in the vette is a huge mistake. it will lose that american muscle car sound. my vette now is supposed to get around 28 mpg. why would I care to get 2 mpg more? its a novelty discussion now saying that its my econo good gas mileage car.

i agree about the diesel decision...kinda stupid, other than the torque..but the REAL reason GM is focked is the fact that they are paying out so much for healthcare, retirement, and employee crap like that...at least thats what my reliable source of a friend says....go fig?

The April 1st date aside, it's actually a true thing. Was talking about it with STV Keith last night (who works in the performance diesel field), before even seeing this thread. GM is, at least in their planning sheets, pursuing this.
It would definately take some getting used to:

Still sounds pretty badass though. :)

Deal here is if (big April fools if) it does happen Vette owners will get behind it.
My father has a '92 LT1 Car with a few mods and over 100k on the odo. I don't own a Vette and never have. When I drive this car I think what the hell is this POS.
So I make a few comments to pops about upgrading to a C5 or 6 and he says and I quote " It's MY Vette not yours. I don't care what YOU think. I have driven the crap out of it. I still dig it. FU...Move along...conversation over."
There is major loyality in those things.
I just think a 1000# engine in the front is not a good idea but, what do I know after all I own a Jeep.

I originally posted it along the same lines as the "midget wrestlers eaten by a lion" and "zombies in Cambodia" threads but Jordy says it's true and I learned a LONG time ago not to fuk with him... :D
BUT! If it ever did come to pass that GM built a diesel Vette, I'd consider it! They wouldn't market one unless it burned clean out the tailpipe, sounded right and was fast as hell. High MPG would be an added bonus and when you consider that, right now, fuel for my Duramax costs $2.94 a gallon and super for my Vette is $3.55, the deal just keeps getting sweeter and sweeter!
AND it'll tow up to 10,000 pounds!!!!
