I'm in the process of looking for a new motor for my boat.I have it down to the World Products 540ci motor and The Gm based 540ci "Attack-Dog".I'm leaning toward the Attack Dog alittle bit more because of a 1 year warranty and being dyno tested, but I'm not to shure what World Products have to offer down that road.My questions are ,what is your opinion on both motors?Have you heard anything bad or good about them?Do they run hard?

Hey 77Superboat, welcome.
I've heard that the World Products blocks are a little beefier. With regard to crate motors, I would make sure it is bluprinted (deck & bore) as well as check the balance & tolerances (we covered the whole crate motor debate under "502 vs ?" in the Blower Motors section).
I'm not an engine builder- Ponponracing or Racing Ray may be able to help you out with the pros & cons.
If it were me, I would lean toward the World Products- the builder could help with the warranty and dyno info. I think they're even buiding up a WP540 in this months Hot Boat for John's Ultra Shadow project.
Happy boating!

I just bought a WP 509 for my 21', and from what I understand, this is the way to go. Jeff Blosdell runs primarily Merlins for his motors, and the bottom ends are bombproof. I would however get the block trued and blueprinted regardless. Mike Wheeler built mine, with new Crower cam and rod bearings, a Crower cam, springs and lifters, JE pistons and Crower rods. Line hone the block and bores, and you should be smokin for years to come.
I would never trust a crate motor. Period. Have it checked, and factor that into the price.

ESPECIALLY from GM...

Froggy, right on. Crate motors are known for always having something wrong. I don't trust anything unless I at least check it myself. World Products makes some pretty sweet components, although I'm still pissed they haven't made any BB Ford stuff. Their parts are way more stout than OEM. Go with World. Good service dept., too.

I recently bought a 514 assembled short block from Ford SVO. I took it apart to cut bigger valve reliefs in the pistons and checked all the clearances. The piston to cylinder bore, ring end gap, deck clearance, main and rod bearing clearance, and crakshaft thrust were all right on the button. The motor came externally balanced and all the weights were written on the rods, pistons and crankshaft. I checked all the weights and found them dead on. I was very impressed with the engine. I have heard a lot of bad stories about crate engines, but this one seems to be o.k. so far. I have not put the engine in the boat yet, but I have smoke tested it on the dyno and it stayed together. I am currently scheduling another dyno session to work out some tuning difficulties.
I will post any problems I have with it.

Thanks everyone for your opinions.I've taken my motor to a well known motor builder in my area.Although he had the motor since winter time,I lost a boating season, but its better then losing a motor.LoL.So at least I'm cleaning up my engine area(painting, new cooling system, hoses, ext).I have a few questions about some parts that I've found recently online.I was on the Keith Eickert site and I see that they sell an Engine Pre-Oiler,Oil Thermostat and a Transmission Oil Thermostat. Are all these parts worth getting? If so which is more inportant? I have a BBC 454 now which is getting work done on it,as you know.I ran the motor last year and it had alittle condensation in it.Will the Oil Thermostat help out the motor? Now I have a (Sen Dure)split oil cooler, that is combined transmission oil and motor oil.Its 8 inches long.I'm looking now for a cooler. Is there a cooler that any of you recommend? Thanks alot again for all your suggestions. :) :) :)

A crate motor from GM should always be teared down, clearanced, blueprinted, etc.etc.etc. before to be used hardly in a boat. Too bad they are not stress released also. But at least, when you cut everything right, that will help making the motor last. At the price they sale those short block or complete units, it's understandable they are not race ready.
