yeah, its a Chrysler. Called a Conquest if I'm not mistaken. That boat has been on ebay a couple of times. Not sure about the pump itself though, odd looking for sure. I guess those gates(?) open like sliding doors? Seen some other old boats with a pump that looked like that, a Buehler Turbocraft.
After looking around on the net, looks like the Buehlers pump was maybe a Hamilton? Looked similar to that one on the Chrysler, but not the same pump.

here's a better shot from Teshio's I grabbed...nothing like a hamilton at all in the 2nd picture.
I also threw in a few shot of the first berkeley just for laughs. Sure would like to find one of these. lol They picked up the unfortunate nickname
'the toilet seat'.

We got an early Berkeley in the lobby Rigger Ill post a pic of it tomorrow.
Never heard that nickname before LOL
For those who haven't seen them it doesn't have a steerable nozzle just "deflectors" which moved in and out of the flow to kick it side to side etc for steering. Really weird looking indeed

Oh yeah, I'd love to see some more shots of that early berk. How'd you get one in your shop? For that matter, what kind of shop do you have? thanks
I like that nickname too. Makes sense when you get a look at that reverse gate though.

I meant the lobby at work, we build aluminum boats remember? (shhhhhh it could errupt into a big fight lol)
We also have one of the Berk mini pumps that went into those first SeaDoo's back in '68
I'd love to take that and make a little alloy "creek hopper boat" about 8 feet long that could drive in a wet gravel parking lot lol
Ill post pics tomorrow

Well I knew you ran those fast little tin bastards but I guess I forgot you built them too, sorry.
Every time I see a thread about SBCs in a jet I crack up at the the guys that say they don't work 'cause I know how fast you guys run.
When I was a kid there was a speed shop that had a little wood boat with one of those small berks in it and I use to sit in it each time my dad took me there. Then when I was older and going there on my own, it was STILL sitting there. Poor thing never did sell, but I thought it was cool.

Haha yeap we are a full retail outlet as well (Burnt Lake Motorsports) we sell pontoons, fishing boats and even <ahem> outboards
We got alot of weird jetboat stuff kicking arouind the place, this company has been in the area in one form or another for over 20 years. You'd be amazed at what was happeneing back in the day even in the whitewater scene. I will definatly dig up some footage and pics that will blow your minds down there about what we were doing to your poor glass boats on the rivers up here LOL
'84 world championships, US racer, glass hull  :D

And as promised:
steering mechanism in "turning" position

Going "straight"

Side veiw

backside of the steering mechanism. Ours seems frozen but you can see to activate reverse that whole assembly slides down redirecting the flow.

One day when I have time I will build about an ~8' Eagle to explore creeks and such with one of the berk mini pumps. Hey if I get stuck we can just pick the boat up and carry it to deeper water LOL
Cheers

very cool piece of history you have there. I had no idea what the backside of one of those looked like, nor how they functioned. Interesting idea.

Xero,
cool pics, thanks. It's so funny when you look at the engineering that went into that early set up and compare it to the simple way things ended up.
Back in the early 80's when I was at Rogers we built a handfull of hulls for whitewater racers...they took a beating. :D Most went down the races they had in Mexico.

Yea those mexican races were CRAZY
there was one ive seen black and white footage of where there were only 3 classes, jet, OB and Zodiac
This one rapid was so vicious no one pre-ran that part of the river, too great a chance you'd sink. The OB guys would run the river with like 8-9 props onboard, break one just crank up the motor and replace lol
That one rapid consumed something like 21 boats in that one video segment, its is insane video footage, the few boats that do make it thru drive out of sight zig zagging between the bows of boats half sunk floating down the river lol
And people think we're nuts! What we do is nothing compared to the old school boys doing the same things in glass boats. I'll try to capture footage of one of the first tunnels running whitewater. Looks like an old eliminator or possible a Cougar. Back in the day of three guys in the boat (driver, nav, mechanic)
Insane stuff back in the 70's
Cheers
Just noticed a pic on our site someone posted of the sequence Im talking about, look at the sunk boats LOL

What I find interesting is that while the setup is whacky it does posses a very important feature. One of the biggest advantages to our steel race nozzles is the smooth flow they offer, unobstructed thrust when travelling in a straight line. That steering mechanism only interfers with the flow when you're turning. Hmmmmmm pretty similar to the steering 'paddles' that we have on our raceboats. when you think about it
Modern drives with the 2 "gimble joints" just are not that great for flow but they are supposedly "progress"
interesting.........
