I've bought and sold a few cars in the past 10 years. usually send in the
release form asap.. a few times I waited, but still sent it in.
I got a call friday from the san jose PD telling me I lost a kayak off my trailer
on a street in san jose..............
I sold that trailer over 6 years ago to a guy down the street......... guess he
never changed the papers, and DMV never got my release form I sent in...
oh well, the cop on the phone just mentioned to have DMV get that release
on file... crap, I don't have any paperwork anymore, and I forgot to ask her
for the license plate when she called.....

I dont know if you know this BUT now you can file a release of liability via online on the DMV web site. This is new, finally! Anyway, I have learned my lesson, you dont file the min someone buys something from you, your still liable for anything that the vehicle hits, parks, etc. FILE ASAP.
