How accurate are they? How well do they work?
Any Pros or Cons to this device?

My buddy's duall with a 514ci in it has one of them. You can definetly hear it in the idle when you play with it. And when we're crawling up hills towing sometimes he'll turn it down to resist detonation. Not sure how it would work on a boat though, I've always wanted to install one to have on the fly timing though

Thats exactly what i was thinkin. might be real slick to be able to adjust your timing on the fly. Run it right up to the edge on a couple of runs and then back it off before you hit the blue button pass...
Also may be good for dialing in the boat as well.... :D

I dont use either pictured but.... I run a B&M 174 ci blower on my 85 GMC crew cab. 468 ci with cast pistons, iron crank and large oval port stock heads. It makes 8 pounds boost by 3900 rpm. I run 87 oc gas, It picked me up 3 to 4 miles to a gallon and 150 hp on demand. 6 miles was my best with out the blower. In 97 I bought the kit for $1689 to the door. 88,000 miles later I still eat 5.0s ass... Love it... I use a BOOST TIMING MASTER from MSD. They make shit happen... I back anything they sell. Never had any greef when a problem surfaced.

I use this exact setup with my crank trigger and timing computer.
I works real well, but I noticed it creeps. I think it is the vibration and rough ride that causes it to move.
It has very little resistance to rotate, anyone driving could pretty much do the "woo-woo" dance with the knob, destroying a motor in the process.

wsuwrhr, what do you think then about this dial? It has 1* increments and looks to be more of a locking or clicking device then just the low resistance dial that comes with the other unit? BTW... no one else drives my boat. :D
but i wouldnt want it creeping i dont think....

I don't know if it serves the same purpose. MSD did not have that unit when I did my ignition system.
Much nicer. Especially with the detents, as long as it works as a stand alone unit without pills.
I set my dial up in the middle, so I could have advance or retard choices.

I ran one on a Nos setup and it worked fine for me. Timing didn't move unless I moved the nob (or bumped it with my knee:D ).

p.s. I have a NOS Cheater setup for sale with a timing control, and a SBP bottle holder. :D

Hey Norm, I might be interested. I'll talk to you about it at CFW, probably be there for a day on Friday or Saturday.

I use the original posted timing control and its very accurate. It would be nice to have detents, but for my purposes i set it at max timing I will ever use in the boat and then if it is bumped it can only retard the timing. Comes in real handy tuning for atmosphere at the races or retarding for timing. Stays fine for 1/4 miles runs retarded w/n2o and cruising at max setting. Hook up the timing light and it retards right on the money for each degree adjusted.
I often thought it'd be nice for the guys running locked out distributors for starting, etc to reduce it for a second when cranking and such.

I use the msd unit in 2 vehicles & my blown injected jet. For my mustang it works nice when I can't put higher octane fuel in it. Just bump it back a few degrees & wela! Same with the boat. If the air gets real shitty in the summer time day then I can add a couple to it & clean it up for cruising... Very nice tool to have on any high performance set up. I checked my accuracy with a timing light & they can be off a touch, but as long as you are aware of where they are at then its relative.

Thanks for all the input! Looks like i will be picking one up as i want to be able to use it with my 2 stage fogger system. :D
Thanks again.
