Don't know about dots on rods but the relief cut in the rod journal goes toward the outside edge of the journal.
If that doesn't make sense or someone can't explain it better....I will do some pictures. Critical.

One side of the rod has a heavier chamfer than the other side. That heavy chamfer MUST go towards the radius in the edge of the rod journal. As I recall the heavy chamfer is always to the left with the piston in the bore correctly, so the left bank chamfers face to the front, and the right bank chamfers face to the rear. (left side being 1 3 5 7/ right 2 4 6 8)....MP

This is the radius cut into the rod to clear the crank pin:

This is the way it goes on in relation to the crank pin.

When both rods are installed on the crank pin..you should have some clearance between the 2 rods (rod side clearance).

im sure you proably already slapped them in but just in case you never did this befire get the slip cover boot thing to go over the rod bolts so when slapping them in you dont nick and damage the craNK
I RATHER TAKE THE CHANCE AND SAY IT and sound like an ass RATHER THEN HEAR ABOUT IT...and wish i reminded or informed you and i feel like an ass for being quite

I caught a guy installing rods the wrong way in school. I said "nice rods" when I walked by. He stood there for the longest time before he figured it out.
