Im just wondering who knows how to figure the gallons of a certian size tank. The tank Im wondering about is 10x40 Im thinking its around 10 gallons.

Dan, 1 gallon = 231 cubic inches. Your 10" diameter x 40" long tanks calculate to roughly 13.5 gallons.

Thanks alot. I tried to figure it out but gave up.... eek!

No problem. I already had the conversion from when I measured/calculated mine. Should probably subtract a gallon to a gallon and a half from that number to get usable volume.

That's interesting. Next time someone asks me what size the engine in my boat is. I will say 2.2 gallon :D
Here is a good source for conversions:

Formula for the volume of a cylinder=
6 x diameter squared x length

The area of a circle is pie x's the radius squared. Dan take the radius of your tanks 5" and square it. that equals 25 x's pie(3.14) which equals 78.5. Mulitply that times you length which is 40" which equals 3140. divide that by 231(number of cubic inches in a gallon) and you have 13.593 gals

I had the formula right I just kept coming up with 40 gallons..... eek! eek!

Dan rounded off those tanks are, if my calculations with my calculator are right, 10.46 gallons each.
63 Stevens in your formula you are not converting the inches to feet which is what Pi is 3.14'
try this; .42x.42=0.1764x3.14=0.5539x3.32=1.839
19.25 divided by1.839=10.46 gallons
Everything has to be in thesame unit for the formula to work.

pgf127rt, I think you used the wrong conversion from cubic feet to gallons. Should have multiplied you cubic foot result of 1.839 by 7.48 gallons/per cubic foot. This gives the same 13.44 gallon result.
My original calculation was done in inches.
pi x radius squared x length=
3.14 x 5in x 5in x 40in =
3.14 x 1000cu in. = 3140 cubic inches.
divide by 231 cu in/gallon= 13.5

Old Squirt, you may be right, but tell Dan to take a 5 gallon bucket and fill her up and see what he comes up with, but it was fun doing all of that figuring, and I probably reduced the 231ci by the wrong number.
