So my wife decides she wants to put a bird feeder in the back yard. Within a couple of days we had a whole flock of sparrows and doves coming by for breakfast lunch and dinner.
There's also a couple of quail that come by first thing in the morning.
So I figured this would be a good opportunity to test my new camera. These were taken with the Nikon D40 Digital SLR w/ 200mm telephoto lens from inside the house, through the glass doors.

Cool.
With some rice, the quail and mourning dove make a good tasting breakfast lunch or dinner.
No service pistol though.

My wife feeds the quail in my backyard as well, a word of advice;
Don't shoot the birds in the yard with a 12 guage.
You will get a visit fror your co-workers and blow a nice hole in the lawn.
...or so I've heard.

Nice pics BC. Watch out for the invasion of pigeons which will find and take over your bird feeder. Our neighbor has bird feeders in their front and back yards. The quails and mourning doves are fine, but the pigeons have got to go!

That bird feeder will be covered in Dove poop quickly, we feed finchs and wrens with wire mesh Dove proof feeders, much cleaner. I can't stand those f'n desert pigeons:mad:
Oh and cool pics nice camera. Heres ours.

Hey BC, when you (or if you already know) figger out your new camera give me a call. I just got the D-80 -55/200 an almost wished I got the Cannon Rebel cuz it's simpler to use. This thing is too complicated for my simple lil mind.
Rio
The D40 is a piece of cake. It has about a dozen automatic settings, depending on what you're shooting. Or you can set it for manual adjustment. I could never get the hang of adjusting aperture and shutter speed, so this thing is just the ticket.
The autofocus is extremely responsive, and you can set what you want it to focus on or it will just select the closest target.

very cool....
my grandparents lived in havasu and my grandfather was a bird fanatic. After my grandmother passed away, he made buddies with this local road runner. 3 times a day this road runner would come and tap on the back door to be fed and it would eat from his hand.....i didnt believe it till i saw it for myself.
the neighbors to our house in havasu would fill their feeder twice a day and she would spread the seed on the ground around the feeder. Every spring, there would be weeds sprouting up everywhere from all the seed.
The amount of quail, dove and roadrunners was amazing that would come. Our house was located off palo verde north on the very north east end of town....the lot accross the street's backyard was the open desert of the airport. I imagine birds from miles out there came to feed.

That's what I get for listening to a photo wiz friend. I can get the shutter speed down but anything else an I'm lost. I'm okay if I just leave it on auto.
Nice closeups, how far away were they?Rio
About 35 feet from the door to the feeder.

That dog looks pissed. Perhaps you shouldn't have the bird feeder where he can see it.

Hurry, quick, get rid of the birds! We had a cute little bird that looked like Zorro and hubby wanted to get rid of it. I said no, let him stay. Zorra invited all his bird friends to have a crap fest on the boat and cars and then Zorro moved out leaving his buddies....:(

This is our resident Hummer.

This is "Danforth" the male Quail (Kathy named them) watching over "Marilyn" on the ground (below).

And this is "Marilyn". Quail mate for life, and this pair come by every morning and evening.

The male has brighter feathers and a thicker head plume.
