LAKE GEORGE -- A 22-year-old Queensbury man was issued three boating tickets Friday after he allegedly drove his father's boat into three boats moored at a motel's dock, sinking his father's boat, police said.
David Mason, 22, of Queensbury and a friend, Shawn Boyle, waded to shore after the 2:30 a.m. collision with boats docked at Surfside Resort, according to the Warren County Sheriff's Office. The 19-foot Ski Nautique he was piloting sank in shallow water because of damage from the crashes, officials said.
They fled the crash scene, but Mason surrendered himself to officers at the scene later Friday, Sheriff Larry Cleveland said.
Mason suffered slight injuries that did not require medical treatment, while Boyle was not hurt, police said.
Sheriff's officers were called when a person at Surfside discovered the damaged boats about 7 a.m. Friday.
Police said Mason was heading north along the western shore when he hit a Boston Whaler-style boat and two cuddy cabin boats.
He first hit one boat, became airborne and hit a dock, hit a second boat and landed on the third before the Ski Nautique slid off into the water and sank in a shallow, rocky area.
Sheriff's Lt. Robert Smith said the three boats that were hit suffered significant damage as well.
"It did some major damage to those other boats, with their fiberglass and windows," Smith said.
Smith said a contractor was hired to recover Mason's boat.
Mason was charged with leaving the scene of a property damage boating accident, reckless operation of a vessel and operating in excess of 5 mph within 100 feet of shore.. He was released pending prosecution in Lake George Town Court on July 19.
