News-Herald Photo/L.J. Frink Fireworks, like this one shown last year, will be bursting in the air over SARA Park starting Thursday as members of the Western Pyrotechnics Association gather for their annual four-day convention in Lake Havasu City. A public fireworks show is scheduled Saturday evening.
Four days full of fireworks is set to brighten the city during the annual pyrotechnics convention held at SARA Park throughout the weekend.
Winterblast, the 17th annual meeting of the Western Pyrotechnics Association, begins Thursday and runs through Sunday. For miles around the city, people can see the random launching and detonation of this year's new fireworks.
“There are approximately 800 pyrotechnics who attend the event each year coming from all over the country to take part,” said Jarrod Lyman of the Lake Havasu City Convention and Visitor's Bureau. “There are professional fireworks manufacturers, distributors and showmen showing off products during the four days. It's really amazing what these people can do with fireworks.”
The event takes place at SARA Park and is open to the public. “People can come to the event any day, but on Saturday the professionals thank the community for hosting them by putting on a spectacular public display for free,” said Lyman. “They launch more than $100,000 worth of product at no cost. The result is a fireworks spectacular where you would be hard pressed to find a better show anywhere,” he said.
The public display on Saturday takes place shortly after dark. “The event brings in a lot of people to our city,” said Lyman. “It's hard to find a hotel room or place to stay during the weekend, it's really a great event.”
The “pyros,” as they call themselves, test various products and show off the newest mixtures of give different color, size and shape combinations. “The event generates a lot of revenue for the city,” said the CVB's Jessica Dietrich. “We are expecting several hundred registered participants and many of them are brining family and or friends to the event as well. The convention's economic benefits quickly add up.”
