View Full Version : Too Much Water To Go Boating

This is getting rediculous. Lakes are too high to get out on them. I'm sure it would be a welcome issue in other parts of the country but I'm getting tired of it.
We have no shortage of places to go boating generally. We have had nearly 30 inches of rainfall this year.
Here in "Green Country" the lakes are surrounded by wooded areas. When the water level goes way up the water goes out into the woods and drags everything lying around on the ground back into the lake. Would be different if it was rocks and desert around the lake.
The daily lake level report for today:
Broken Bow Lake is 3.8 feet ABOVE normal and rising.
The average discharge will be 2800 cubic feet per second
through the turbines from: 12:00 PM to 12:00 Midnight.
Flood control pool utilization is 14%.
Copan Lake is 7.7 feet ABOVE normal and steady.
The average discharge will be 1475 cubic feet per second.
Flood control pool utilization is 24.6%.
Eufaula Lake is 5.4 feet ABOVE normal and rising.
The average discharge will be 22000 cubic feet per second
through the gates and turbines around the clock.
Flood control pool utilization is 52.8%.
Ft Gibson Lake, OK is 10.2 feet ABOVE normal and steady.
The average discharge will be 10600 cubic feet per second
through the turbines around the clock.
Flood control pool utilization is 26%.
Hulah Lake is 14.1 feet ABOVE normal and rising.
The average discharge will be 2754 cubic feet per second.
Flood control pool utilization is 32%.
Kaw Lake is 5.8 feet ABOVE normal and steady.
The average discharge will be 10,000 cubic feet per second thru the
gates and turbines around the clock.
Flood control pool utilization is 13.5%.
Keystone Lake is 7.9 feet ABOVE normal and steady.
The average discharge will be 28,000 cubic feet per second
through the gates and turbines around the clock.
Flood control pool utilization is 18.6%.
Hudson Lake is 5.5 feet ABOVE normal and steady.
The average discharge will be 15,500 cubic feet per second thru the
turbines around the clock.
Flood control pool utilization is 25.7%.
Oologah Lake is 7.0 feet ABOVE normal and steady.
No discharge is scheduled for today.
Flood control pool utilization is 24.5%.
Grand Lake O' The Cherokees, Pensacola Dam is at elevation 745.6 and steady.
The average discharge will be 13,000 cubic feet per second thru the
turbines around the clock.
Flood control pool utilization is 5.4%.
Skiatook Lake is 3.0 feet ABOVE normal and steady.
The average discharge will be 1155 cubic feet per second.
Flood control pool utilization is 18.3%.
Tenkiller Lake is 3.0 feet ABOVE normal and steady.
The average discharge will be 840 cubic feet per second
through the turbines from: 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM.
Flood control pool utilization is 7%.
Robert S. Kerr Lock & Dam & Reservoir (L&D 15)
The average discharge will be 160,000 cubic feet per second
through the gates and turbines around the clock.
Webbers Falls Lock & Dam & Reservoir (L&D 16)

any time to meet power demands. If you need additional information call 669-7085.

We are grateful for the water but it's nearly July and we did'nt go boating as much in May as we usually do. We're ready  Only been out twice in the family boat and twice in the fast boat.

The problem with most of us here around Texas and Oklahoma, we can't even use the lakes... most are too flooded... been that way for around 2 months here. I've been telling people around here to get their boats in asap for work, because when we get slammed, we run 1 to 2 months behind... so by the time we get to some of them, summer is over...

Yeah but you wouldn't want to swim or put your boat in THAT water afterwards. Those transom stains are the pitts...........MP

Its amazing we can build some of the greatest water works of all time (ie the Panama Canal and St Lawrence) and we can't move water back and forth across the country as needed? I know its not nice to fool mother nature, but wouldn't giant pumping stations and canals running east and west be benifitial to our country? To me, a simple thinker, I think it could be done, and for a lot less tax dollars than our government drops annually on stupid projects...

Today's levels are kaw +20, keystone +17, gibson +12 and those should keep going up with all the water coming from Kansas. Kaw dumps into Keystone and that's a big hang out for alot of us.

How about this: Lake Mead -115, Lake Powell -89. Those aren't temperatures, those are minus below normal pool. Our drought has been going on for about 8 years now and who knows when it may end. When I read about the rains in TX and OK its hard to believe. Our normal rainfall here (So Cal) is prox 12 inches, this year we've had about 2 and our rainy season is over! There's plenty of water, its just in the wrong places at this time...

They have closed Arcadia Lake (Edmond) and Possum Lake (Texas) because of the high waters. The lake I oversee is barely usable, with only one out of four ramps safe to use. I have not had a day in the last month that would allow me to prep my boat for going out. We have set new records for consequetive days with rain. Even if I could get my boat prepped, and went to do the 4th at Grand Lake, the high water would prevent me from getting from my usual ramp/cruising area to the main lake due to a low bridge. And the main lake is going to be so full of debris that it could be risky.

So much water now the Corp has stopped trying to post lake levels.
This is the Corps of Engineers lake information recording for Monday, July 02, 2007 as
of 1:00 PM.
Many of the lakes managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers continue to rise as
the result of wide-spread rainfall occurring this past week across Kansas, Oklahoma,
and Texas. Many of the lakes will fill their flood control pools and increased flows from
those lakes should be expected.
For recreational purposes, a number of the Tulsa District lakes will be dangerously high
this week.
For additional information please contact the Reservoir Information Control Center at
918-669-7512.

Lakes around the Dallas area are closing.....the lake I normally go to is 9' over normal and rising. Since we're in pretty flat terrain here that's a lot. This lake has come up 26 FEET since January......:jawdrop:
Texoma is 4' below the spillway and they're letting out 4.5 million gallons per MINUTE into the Red River...
Only lake around that's near normal is Lake Ray Hubbard, it's a constant elevation lake. The people downstream are getting hammered, though.
90% chance of heavy rain for the next three days......

I'm not looking forward to returning home! I couldn't get there last week so I stayed away. I'm in the airport now and of course my flight is being delayed...hope it doesn't get canceled this time!:D
Our cat park is right next the Lake Lavon, we now have two new rivers running through the park! It's not a good thing but so far the cats are fine!

Info, Fonda and I drove past Eufaula last week on the way to Wagoner to visit her aunt. The north end of the lake is bright red, looks like a runoff pond in south Tulsa.
And jeezus, it's full. There's a softball park in Eufaula next to the lake, the top of the outfield fences are about 1' above the water.
