I'm new to this jet boat thing. I'm looking at a 77 Ranger. Its real clean. Only thing bad (that I have heard) Is it has a 455 Olds and a Jacuzzi Jet. What do you guys think. I don't need a race boat, just something to start with. Thank you,
Randy

You just answered your own question !!........................the 455 and jacuzzi are not the most famous or preferred...........but they work and you can go and enjoy a day on the water with your family. :D

No Family just a 19 year old kid trying to get back on the water.

The other one I'm looking at is a 19 ft chalenger, with a 454 :D and a dominator jet. He wants 3000 but the interior is tore up from the floor up.

It's hard to tell which one's a better deal without photos. You can find a decent Jet boat for $3000-$4000 sometimes...
Where are you located?

Well when I lived in Lakeside I saw all around town there were Jet boats for $4000 and under. Shit I bought my Spectra in El Cajon for $400 and just needed a lil TLC! Depends how handy you are I suppose with mechanical, fiberglass, electrical. And don't over brag yourself or you'll be over your head in problems

N02 Chevelle
06-29-2007, 09:30 PM
I'm not bad with mechanical and electrical, But more towards cars. I never have touched a boat. Pumps and hydraulics and fiberglass aren't my deal. I only have 2700. I have driven a couple of outboards including a 1998 DCb mach 22 with twin 2.5's. Of course that was at 45 mph. But never a jet. To start off with, what do you think is my best bet so far. What are some things on these boats I need to look for. Things that would depreciate the boat.

Dude, which one runs/looks better, that is the bottom line.
If the jacuzzi is a WJ, that is a decent pump, and I doubt you are going to make either into a real hot rod, so pick the one that will keep you on the water all summer. If you want to upgrade next year you should be able to get your $ back, as long as you don't buy a boat you'll have to put much into.

Umm look out for 455 olds and pumps other than Berkeley and Domintor lol.
Jet boats are tons of fun for how much money they are, there's nothing like a roaring v8. Outboards are pretty fast but they're just too gay to me:eek:
Try to stick with a boat with a 454 or 460. Have you looked on boat trader?
About 2 months ago me and my pops picked up a Hondo for $2000 with headers, tunnel rams, and the whole deal. I would recommend not rushing into finding a jet boat now, find some others and make offers. Look for cracks and rotted out wood.
Search craigslist. And the traders. What part of SD are you in?
And p.s. I'm young too and have two damn boats lol. The whole way to learn is fockin up stuff. Have been with Jets my whole life, and have done fiberglass stuff, and built my first motor myself when I was 17, including the machine work. Dont let any old pricks tell you you can't do it when youre motivated:)

Escondido. I've searched boat trader and ***boat, and craigslist. What exactly is so bad about the jacuzzi and the 455?

pw_Tony
06-29-2007, 09:45 PM
455 just have a lot of oiling issues so they don't last very long after 4000rpm. And it's not just a rumor they do blow up.
I'm not exactly sure what is bad about the jacuzzis, but one of my boats have one that I have to deal with, actually alot of guys have them, they're just not as common as the berkeley.

just a link with a lil info

N02 Chevelle
06-29-2007, 09:56 PM
So your saying the Jacuzzi isn't as bad as everyone says, and to just completely stay away from the 455 all together?

Cs19
06-29-2007, 09:59 PM
Buy the one with a chevy and a dominator.

pw_Tony
06-29-2007, 10:01 PM
A jet pump is a jet pump, unless you're planning on doing some expensive tricks with your pump. I don't see why a Jacuzzi would be bad. I got priced at JP marine in Lakeside to do a nice set up, change bowl, impellar etc, would cost me about $2500 to do up my Jacuzzi. And if you had a Berkeley there's parts available at a cheaper cost.
But if you find a good deal for under $1000 bucks a 455 is fine long as you don't hot rod it... but since you're 19 and it's a jet boat, youre foot will probably be in the pedal all the time!

The Challenger is a better boat/Chevy's a better motor/Dominator's a better pump. When it comes time to resell and upgrade, this pkg will sell much faster.

Thank you. I think I have decided to get away from the Ranger. It's a pretty clean boat, but there is some water in the rear and I could see some light trhough the transom. Plus some had upgraded the fuel system with a 10 gallon tank in the front. Drilled and cut and just not something I want. Hopefully I'll be able to go look at the challenger today. I'm really looking forward to it.

Hey, man
Just before you make your debeau on the fast and the furius the chemical formula for nitrous oxide is N2O That is two atoms of nitrogen and one atom of oxygen. This is nitrous oxide. NO2 would be Oxide Oxide. The japs in WWll Tryed that in WWll and blew the cylinders off of there aircraft @10000 ft oxygen is a real explosive if you don't know what it can do!!!!!!

Yes the 455 does have oil issues. On top of that it has a shorter stroke, meaning you will have some pretty good snap/whole shot. But on the top end your gonna loose every time against a 454 or a 460. Also parts for the 454 and 460 are easier to find. If something minor goes wrong with one of those motors. On a last minute thing you could run to the auto parts store and get a replacement.
Also the Challenger hull is a nice hull, very well laid up. I have a friend that has one and it rides really nice. As far as interior, you could get that fixed for under a $1000 if you shop around. It would be more help to us if you posted some pics.

the olds has a long stroke 4.250 chevy 4.00 ford has the shortest 3.850.thats why olds like to spin rod bearings, greater rotational surface speed = heat. buts thats true on all engines as the stroke increases.

If my old sub woofers and amp sell tomorrow, I'll be picking the Challenger up thursday night, Cleaning in up a little on friday and saturday, and headed out to San V for a little break in session. Breaking in my driving skills, not the boat. The guy took me out in it this morning, full throttle @4100 RPM we were doing about 65 mph. The boat was way stable. The only issue that I have with it is it only has a hand throttle. That needs to be converted ASAP!!! The bulk head is in the way of putting in a pedal, As soon as I get it I'll put up some pics and see if you guys can't give me some ideas. Thanks again everyone for your help. I can't wait for my first river trip! :D

Well if you were turning only 4100 RPM at 65 mph, lets just say I WISH my boat was running that good, but I need to rebuild my pump:(
Now if you were guessing that's how fast you were going then that's different, a GPS might disappoint you. But for $3000 or so(?) that really does sound like a good deal that you could have a lot of fun with:D

I'm notsure how to PM. But I'm for sure going out sunday. Funny thing I learned about my boat, its actually a 78. The numbers on the hull tell all. But hopefully you'll be out there on sunday. What time do they open do you know? I'm planning on getting there early to try to avoid the 115 degree heat.

N02, to send a PM(private message) click on the name of the person on the left hand side of the screen. It will prompt you of things you can do. It should be easy from there. I'll send you a test. When you log in it will show you that you have a private message on the upper right hand side of the screen.edit( I just tried but the system has added that feature to your name yet)
Where did you hear 115 in East County this weekend? :(
