I cant believe you ****ers put this piece of shit in office for four more years.
Bush spares Libby from jail term
Libby is one of the most senior White House officials ever convicted
US President George W Bush has intervened to prevent Lewis Libby, a convicted former vice-presidential aide, from serving a prison term.
President Bush described as "excessive" the 30-month sentence Libby was facing for obstructing an inquiry into the leaking of a CIA agent's name.
Though no longer required to go to jail, Libby is still due to serve a period of probation and pay a fine.
A leading Democratic politician said Mr Bush's decision was "disgraceful".
History will judge the president "harshly" for using his power to benefit his own Vice President's chief of staff, Harry Reid, the leading Democrat in the US Senate, said.
Lewis Libby, also known by his nickname, "Scooter" Libby, was found guilty in March of perjury and obstructing justice in a case connected to Washington's decision to invade Iraq.
His trial saw the White House accused of having illegally made public the identity of a serving CIA agent, Valerie Plame, in an apparent effort to embarrass her husband.
WHAT IS CIA LEAK CASE ABOUT?
Libby was found guilty of lying to the FBI and a grand jury over revelations about CIA agent Valerie Plame's identity
Critics said the White House leaked Ms Plame's identity to undermine her husband, ex-ambassador Joseph Wilson
He had publicly cast doubt on the Bush administration's case for war in Iraq
The alleged cover-up, rather than the leak itself, was the subject of the Libby trial
Q&A: CIA leak case
Begging a president's pardon
Ms Plame's husband, a former US diplomat, had publicly criticised the basis for the invasion of Iraq.
Libby was found to have lied to investigators about conversations where he mentioned Ms Plame but he was not convicted of having directly leaked her name.
He was sentenced to two-and-a-half years in prison, two years of probation and a fine of $250,000 (£125,000).
Democratic leader Harry Reid said the conviction was "the one faint glimmer of accountability for White House efforts to manipulate intelligence and silence critics of the Iraq war".
Responding to President Bush's decision to commute Libby's sentence, he said: "Now, even that small bit of justice has been undone."
'Forever damaged'
Hours before President Bush's announcement, an appeals court had told Libby he could no longer delay going to jail.
The judge ruled that Libby could not remain free on bail while his lawyer appealed against the sentence.
President Bush said he had until now refrained from intervening in the case, waiting instead for the appeals process to take its course.
"But with the denial of bail being upheld and incarceration imminent, I believe it is now important to react to that decision," he said.
"I respect the jury's verdict," President Bush said. "But I have concluded that the prison sentence given to Mr Libby is excessive," Mr Bush said.
However, he said, Libby's remaining punishments - the probation period and fine - were "harsh" and would leave his reputation "forever damaged".
The BBC's James Westhead in Washington said the president's decision was a compromise between pardoning Libby outright and allowing his full sentence to stand.

Disgraceful? Perhaps but not near as bad as Bill-"Pardons-R-Us"-Clinton who sold pardons to whoever had the big money to buy-in.....seems like there was about 4-500 pardons sold by the Clintons in the closing hours of his failed adminstration....guess he just needed a little extra spending money after he and the little woman stole the Whitehouse furniture, silver and China. Politics is such an ugly game....:D

That's the first thing that came to my mind. We were told that this kind of thing can't happen instantly and that it must go through the "process". I remember hearing that it would take at least a year to free those two if it happened at all. Now this???

I listened to an interview a couple weeks ago with the DA on the case. There is more to that story then the media has presented. From the little I heard and I haven't taken time to research it, at least one of the agents wasn't shall we say real clean.
I'm reserving judgement as to my original thoughts it was a bad trial and unwarranted arrest.
As for Libby, he wasn't guilty of anything more than stupidity.

Libby was a loyal cabinet member and a friend of the President as stated in an earlier post let`s compare Clintons Pardons ond Bush`s and this was not a Pardon he will still have a record, must pay the $250,000.00 and still has a couple of hearings/trials left.

I don't know the whole story of what happend, but he was convicted by a jury of his peers... that kind of says he was guilty of something.
I think its wrong for presidents to give any type of pardon... same with goveners with granting stays of exacution. They had thier chances with a jury and appeals.

For those who wants to raise hell about Pres Bush commuting the jail sentence of his Vice President's aide from "prison" to "not-prison", let's consider a near identical scenario, shall we?
Lets say ........
A full CABINET SECRETARY (not just an aide), convicted in federal court of Conspiracy, Perjury, and Obstruction of Justice, the identical charges Scooter Libby stands convicted of.
Lets say, the president he worked for issued a FULL PARDON to said Housing Secretary. All convictions totally expunged, nonexistent, gone totally bye-bye.
Same? Different? Who still cries foul?
The name Henry Cisneros may ring a bell.
Secretary of Housing & Urban Development, Henry Cisneros.
Bush screwed the "american people" and the "justice system".

United States National Security Advisor who was FIRST:
Fined $23,000 for conflict of interest charges
2 years later he:
waited over 14 months to tell the president that the Communist Chinese had managed to get their hands on designs for several US Nuclear Warheads. He didn't think it was important enough to tell him sooner.
Then, 4 years later he:
Removed all 5 classified copies of a single report commissioned from Richard Clarke, covering internal assessments of the Clinton administration's handling of the unsuccessful 2000 millennium attack plots.
When initially questioned by reporters, Berger claimed that the removal of the top-secret documents in his attache-case and handwritten notes in his jacket and pants pockets was accidental.
He later, in a guilty plea, admitted to deliberately removing the copies and cutting three up with scissors. Two of the copies were recovered by DOJ investigators and returned to the archives.
The first acts were PARDONED by a president.
Let's compare sentences for the later to Libby, shall we?
Scooter Libby ############# Sandy Berger
Perjury/obstruction ######## Destruction of classified
$300,000 fine ############# $50,000 fine
30 months prison ########### 24 months probation

Hmmmmmm, it seems that some on the left don't like some of President Bush's pardons and some on the right don't like President Clinton's pardons. Does this mean you have a bi-partisan base for a movement to eliminate or restrict the President's power to issue pardons or commute sentences.

ES,
No. However, I would be interested in being a part of such a movement. It seems that anyone who is a friend of the Prez, can get away with a crime of just about anything. Cocaine possession, auto theft, tax evasion, moonshining, unlawful disposal of hazardous waste, AWOL, just to name a few. Give me a f'n break.

Much Ado about nothing......
When a President pardons a Charles Manson or other heinous degenerate we'll have something to worry about. The exhaustive lists of George and Bill's pardons are mostly politcal nonsense. I so believe Bill gets the award for most benefits to his personal causes though, but that's just my opinion.
Libby once again was convicted more of stupidity than anything serious. The Plame case never should have received the attention it did and wouldn't if it hadn't been of such a poiltical nature trying to stick so some shit on the White House wall.

As soon as he stopped BOLDING sentence 2, is the line "to people who have served their entire sentence".

Not even Libby, who you want to cry about, escapes a federal conviction. That stands.

I guess you think it's OK for your Prez to clean up the records of cocaine dealers and car thives. I don't. I don't think it was OK for Clinton or any other to do the same. We have a criminal justice system that shouldn't be selective based on who you know or who you blow.
We'll see if Libby's conviction stands or not. My guess he will receive a full pardon before Mr. Bush leaves office.

Prosecuted and convicted of what? You have no facts, nothing that says that he did anything wrong that rises to the level of incarceration yet you think he should be put in jail. Somewhere, Stalin and Lenin are smiling widely

Because a great deal of people do not like George Bush, they will go to any means possible to drum up some kind of case to harm him or discredit him. If they can't get to him they go after Dick Cheney and Karl Rove. The whole Plame fiasco was targeting Rove, Cheney and Bush in that order and it failed misaerably. Libby was collateral damage in the effect someone had to get stuck with something due to all the high dollar time consuming "investigation".
Libby got nailed basically for an absentminded untruth or something of a similar nature construed as obstruction of justice.
Bush's pardon basically removed the man doing time for an asinine ending to a witch hunt which should have been terminated months prior and never even went to court.
The whole damn situation was put in place by Wilson and Plame in their vain attempt to smear the Whitehouse.
I for one am sick and tired of these ridiculously childish charades being played out constantly by both sides but in particular those trying to thwart the sitting President. There's a whole lot of bloated egos within the country's power structure that need to simply grow up.
Wasting time on the Libby farce is just more crying over spilt milk with no relevant purpose. All that comes out of the Congress these days seems to be obstructionism. If these people lived in the business world they would all be fired for lack of production and ineptitude.

Change party and all you do is change flavors. We will most likely have to resign ourselves to the facts of both parties offering different versions of the power machines they've built.
As much as you dislike the present administration it's hard to fathom how you can hope the other side has anything to improve with? The socialist leanings of H.Clinton and her ongoing tirades based on what the polls say each day prior to her latest spiel, is quite disconcerting to me. I plain don't trust her and felt the same about her hubby. Bill was tolerable from the point of his personality but his "machine" presents just as many targets as the current admin.
To me the scariest trend in government is the 60's radicals in the form of Pelosi, Boxer, and friends that have no concept whatsoever of reality or morality. They care only about their livfelong agendas of euphoria and in no way are capbable of making life deicisons for the best benefit of this country.
Bottom line is the terrorists might do this country a favor if they blew up the Capitol when both House and Senate were in full session and the Pres was standing up front but they know doing this would be against their own interests so we're stuck with this bunch of fools.

Tex,
I understand exactly where you are coming from and agree with most of what you commented, however I believe that anyone running on either side, with the exception of Hillary, is capible of doing a better job than what we currently have. If Ron Pauls had a bit more stature, and was slightly less eccentric, I believe he could do a good job. Sad to say that the Mr Paul's low points will never change.

I just wanted to give you every opportunity to re-open the can of worms I burried you with over the Plame investigation/non-crime.
I personally think it's interesting that you don't cry over Richard Armitage's lack of prison time while you sure want to hang Dick Cheney.
Again, feelings that have no basis in reality. Quite entertaining.
It's a shame that you aren't nearly as intelligent as you would like everyone to believe.
I'm not the one who WAS WRONG in a 3-page urinating contest over pluralizing a word, am I smart guy? :D
How about some more diatribes eh?
However, I believe that in time we will all learn how crooked Dicky boy really is and was.
So, how many decades will it take to earn a retraction if you turn out to be wrong?
Of course, a complete lack of evidence is certainly not proof that it didn't happen (the core of all nutball conspiracies).
It's a good thing your gut knows what goes on better than the FBI did in rooting out Armitage. Maybe you missed your calling in selling insurance. Go FBI and clean it all up.
