Since were having cold temps right now. I wanted to fill the block with Anti-freeze. In this picture you can see it dribbling down and puddling in the suction piece. My frost plugs popped out from ice back in Dec when we had a bad cold snap. It appears to be leaking behind back motor mount. I had a couple plugs pop out a couple years ago. You'd think I'd learn. I took my boat out last friday for a spin and noticed more than usual water in the bildge. I know what the water came from now. After running for an hour I had about 2 gallons in the bildge.

Aw crap! So it's coming out of the bell housing area? There aren't any soft plugs back there on a 460. :skull:

Nope, Creg's looked on his when he had his leak. His turned out to be a hose. I don't think I'm that lucky. Yes, its coming from the bell housing. After we were out on Lake Wash, didn't have much water in the bildge. But I imagine under pressure it must be squirting out.

Time for some JB weld....?????
That sucks Chris, My neighbor had a 460 for sale, I'll check and see if he still has it. I know I can get it cheap if he does.

Chris came over today and we pulled the motor. The good news is that he didn't crack the block, :) the bad news is that he just re-opened an exsisting JB Weld patch job. :supp: SUCKS BIG TIME!!!! Looks like someone slipped one over on old sleepy Chris............... :crossx:

Oh boy! We hadn't even thought of that one yet! :D
I would try sewing that one up if it was mine. I have a box of those little tapered cast plugs somewhere...... wonder if I could find them???
Or just do a better job of JB-ing it. ;)

Maybe but there is a piece about the size of a quarter that looks like it's about to come out (can't really see it in the picture).

forget the JB weld stuff and have it welded correctly. 99% nickle rod and an arc welder will weld that right up. unless you have a tig machine, even better.

Weld that puppy up. It will never leak again....

My opinion...boys are right...weld it bro. I ran a welded chevy for years...no prob. Actually new owner still running it.

All that work, and all you had to do was spend a few minutes draining out the water and adding antifreeze. We read about this happening 1 or 2 times a year.

Damn Chris. That sucks. There's got to be somebody in your neck of the woods that can weld that up all purdy like. Good luck

malcolm
02-19-2006, 11:08 AM
You could try to nickle rod it. Then if that doesn't work, Matt says he has a block. ;)

Chris, that sucks, I did check with the neighbor, but he already sold the 460. Looking at the pic there appears to be heat marks just below the screwdriver, like maybe they tried to weld it once before? Might check with some of the better machine/welding shops and see what they can do.

Lucky in that it will leak to the outside of the motor. If you want to try something better than JB weld and not actually weld it, get some Devcon.
http://www1.mscdirect.com/CGI/NNSRIT?PMPXNO=1658619&PMT4NO=4928701
Then grab a handful of cast iron shavings from underneath a boring machine at your local machine shop.
Mix it up per directions....add some shavings...mix some more. Grind out your messy crack nice and clean...put the stuff on. Cure with a heat lamp 24 hours.

you dont neccesarily have to weld the actual crack. web that entire section with a plate. similar to what is done on the #3 cylinder on a VW block. they too tend to crack there all the time. it will actually strengthen the block even more and you wont have to worry about the crack at all. if more lets go underneath it will be in a small void.

I saw some of that Devcon today in the auto section at Fred Meyer's. :p

Hoss, its not as bad as you think. I had an 85 HP Merc outboard that over heated because the hydrilla had wrapped around the water pickups. Between each cylinder, there was a good sized crack. A little JB Weld fixed it and kept it fixed for 3 years.

Well just for starters your comparing apples and oranges. For two,,,What the hell is a hydrilla?

Thanks for all the advice guys. My first choice will be to have it welded. I really don't want to have to get a new block and swap aparts. Its running awesome the way it its.

My folks fly in tomorrow from Arizona to see there grand kids. Emily's made me stay at home doing Wife Chores :crossx: . Tuesday was her first day back at work, its been a little emotional around our house. I'm hoping this weekend I can go up to Kona's to clean off the block, drain oil and any remaining water and get it prepped for Dave in Auburn. Emily could go do Girlfriend things and my folks would be more that happy to babysite. :)

Chris,
2 week school to teach me how to do the job I've been doing for about 3 years. Supposed to be cold here this weekend, probably the same cold front that came through there on Monday/Tuesday.
Good luck with the motor, pic's of the repair, and I'd fill it up with water and try to pressurize it BEFORE it goes back in.

Whats your schedule this coming week? My folks leave Monday night, so I can head up to prep the block and take it to Auburn.

Tig weld it or use the devcon. I had my cousin repair a pontiac head right next to the headbolt on the center exhuast ports where I got a little too eager with the die grinder. has not had a problem in 7 years. 100+ ft tq on that bolt. 1/8" away from the weld. if you stick weld it it should be done very slowly, one zap at a time or it could crack. also needs to be relieved by pinging it with a pointed hammer in between zaps. anything is worth a try rather then a new block..personally though, I would go with the tig. I took it in to a place last night. Said he'd fix it for $250. Seems like a deal for time spent, new block and gaskets. Who knows after it was torn apart, I might justify to myself a new cam, intake manifold, etc. Then it could realy add up fast. :D
Aluminum Head Welders, is the name of the place. Specializing in blocks, manifolds & cylinder heads. TIG certified & 20 years experience.
