A good friend of mine is in a wheelchair because of a similar accident. It was 10ish years ago at work in an office job. His way is paid but he'd rather be able to launch his boat himself.

Reminds me of a gag we used to pull at my last shop. Use strong tape to tape the height adjustment lever up. When someone sits down the chair will bottom out. Scares the crap outta ya, but no permanent damage to your back or the chair.
