seems some trucks have more probs than others on the steering shaft.

Just had mine replaced about a month ago. They have redesigned the intermediate shaft and are no longer doing the "lube" fix. They'll do it free. I haven't had any problems since. Give your dealer a call....

Its a poor design. I had mine worked on but it came back..... its one of the very few complaints I have about the truck.

Like others have said. GM redesigned the intermediate shaft. The new one has like a teflon sleeve around it. I had mine replaced. If they replace it and the clunk is still there then they need to repalce the lower column bearing as well and that will fix it for good.

My buddy has had the same problem with his 2500. He has replaced the shaft 3 times. He took it in yesterday and one of the service guys mentioned the problem has to do with the Lower Steering Column Bearing Part # 88963617 and not the shaft. He got it back last night and it is fixed. Less than 2 hours to have it fixed.

Does anyone know if this is a recall?I have a customer complaining of everyones symptons and I dont want to have them start throwing money at the steering if its under a recall.

I've got the same issue here, replaced it twice and now it's out of warranty... anyone know what the costs are to have it fixed? BTW, mine is an '01, looks like it took quite a while to change the design..

2ndIInone and DAB:
GM has known that they have hada problem for years with their steering shafts and the new one has been in development for a while now. It should be covered even if you are out of warranty. Also, like I previously mentioned if the chatter or looseness is still there after the intermediate shaft is replaced then the lower column bearing needs to be replaced as well. Had both of mine done MANY miles ago and all is good.
