Just returned from our Powell trip and we couldn't have asked for better weather. Found a little Island paradise at the back of Rock Creek Canyon, that with a few hours of work with the rakes, turned it into a great beach.
Found an awesome hike at the back of Face Canyon.

I've been wondering about that hike in the back of Face. We haven't been in there since the water went down but it used to be a cool hike years ago.

Were heading up Friday morning.
Were there many scouts comming in and looking for that spot??
Rock Creek's not known for having much camping.
It looks like an awsome spot.
We have about 6 boats going up, and that looks perfect.

If you go all the way to the end of Rock Creek, there are some great sand beaches. This little Island was full of tumbleweeds and sticker bushes when we arrived. Just a little fire, diggin & some raking and it turned out nice. Our group consisted of 3 houseboats, 6 boats & 4 Seas Doo's surrounding the Island with plenty of space for more boats. Just to the right of this spot is our normal camping beach, but it was occupied this year. Don't be afraid to ask when someone is leaving if it's already taken.

I skied through a canyon about that wide that was in the south part of face canyon. It is called something like Slot Cyn Entrance. That was the biggest rush I have ever had on a ski. Through some of the turns you would loose site of the boat and the rope would rub against the wall until you got to the turn to follow the boat again. If it were not that it was a flat bottom v-drive pulling me there would have been no way it could have maneuvered through there that fast. I wish I had pictures of us doing it.
The canyon is marked on the bottom of this page. http://www.riverlakes.com/padre_bay_map.htm

That was on of the wider canyons, but I still couldn't imagine skiing thru it.:jawdrop:
It was the one's like this that made me nervous, pretty much just had to idle and let the crew pull me thru.http://www.glamisdunes.com/invision/uploads/post-1281-1181757479_thumb.jpg

You never know what's around the next corner. For me, the beauty of Lake Powell is in exploring all the canyons and fingers. Imagine going thru a tight spot like above and then the canyon opens back up, you cruise in deeper and sitting in front of you is a huge sand beach shaded by a 100' overhang in the canyon wall or coming across a waterfall at the back of one of the canyons. If you stick to boating the main channel, IMHO your missing the best part the lake has to offer.
The water temps last week were averaging about 78 degrees and the depth in the canyons is plenty deep enough. Those sandstone canyon walls seem to go straight down, here's a pic of one wall, it's probably over 300 feet deep from the water line.

DON'T GO!!!
There's no water in the lake! It's a long drive! They only sell crappy gas! Ice cream cups at Dangling Rope no longer actually say, "Dangling Rope." You may pick up a quagga muscle! Hippies are gonna blow the dam! Al Gore will hate you!!!:D :D :D
I've tried to get people to stop going for years, but they just won't listen!
Great pics Bohica. Been going since 1984 and I'll be on the lake this upcoming Monday to the following one. I've never seen that spot in Face, so I'll check it out. Thanks!

It really isn't bad if you have 6-8 people on the boat to sit on the sides and guide it through. There are really some great places to explore and doing it by boat is the only way to go.
You should try the drive into Rainbow Bridge with the tour boats going fast in there. The water gets insane and boats can get pushed into the wall if they dont know what they are doing. The the big waves just jump off the walls for the next hour.
I dont know if the tour boats can still get back there or not with the current water level?

First, where do you get all those fireworks? I need some.
Next, what is the story on that hose/pump set up?

bohica
07-07-2007, 10:16 AM
Fireworks came from Valley of the Fire, just north of Vegas.
The fire hose is a 2 stroke motor w/ pump, used as home fire protection. Just put it in the pool and you can defend your house from fire until the pro's show up. We used it as a beach clean up tool, worked great to push away all the debris that would float up to the beach overnight.
