WILL THE WIDTH OF THE STRINGER BETWEEN THE VDRIVE HAVE ANY EFFECT ON THE BOATS HANDLING?JUST TRYING TO MAKE YOU GUYS THINK

OK, I'm thinking!!, what's your theory????....

It can definately have an effect. If the stringers are too wide, the v-drive plate will bend, causing the vdrive to explode or the prop shaft to snap off. This can have a negative effect on boat handling and can transfer the pivot point from the vdrive location to the drivers center of gravity as he does a spread eagle over the deck. (Just a very wild guess) :D

If the stringers are wide, you add a brace from the plate to the stringers to eliminate the flex, right????.......

ok, I'll be serious (if I have to). Yes braces would be advised. In fact any boat with serious power should run braces to minimize plate deflection regardless of plate width.

Right on!, now that we eliminated the flex, how is stringer width effect handling?????........

a boat with norrow stringer width is less likley to rock from side to side then a boat with a wider stringer width

why would you have to brace the vdrive if it wasnt a pivot point

Ok, please explain how does the bottom of the boat know where the stringers are???..

why would you have to brace the vdrive if it wasnt a pivot pointBecause the force from the prop is pushing against the v-drive, I have seen this before with a thin v-drive plate!!..

i agree is what i was saying about the pivot point

I sureashell don't know the answer to this stuff so I'm goin for popcorn, be back later :D
This must the "theory week" here on vdrive forum, not that I'm not enjoying it! :)

Ok, got ya, but still don't understand why stringer width has to do with handling??, unless maybe you have a flexy flyer???.....

ok lets say you have a 21 ft v bottom vdrive with a 48 gear spinning it up around 6800 rpm do you thimk the rotation of the vdrive will transfer ,think about it

hey is your boat one of boyds old hobbits

OK, I see what you're getting at, you're talking about torque, I was thinking location, you have a point there!!!..But you can compansate for that with the plate adjustment, ie: low on one side, higher on the other!!..Right????....

hey is your boat one of boyds old hobbitsYes it is!, it's the one George S drove. Chuck bought a D'Cucci and used all the hardware out of it, when I got it, it was a bare hull!...

never thought about that low side high side but i think torge would be a close explanation,in for the pivot point some here dont think the prop is trying to drive up thru the boat being that the farther foward the vdrive the more bow lift you will get but hey these are only my opinons and thats it what engs in your flat

If you think about it, the prop is at the end of the shaft, so, what is it pushing against?, the other end, right??!. As far as the v-drive goes, the strut angle and location determines where the v-drive goes!..As far as bow lift or tail lift, that depends on the prop (been thru that nightmare), when you buy a prop, the first thing they ask is what degree is the shaft!, I tried a prop from a 12 degree angle on mine which is an 8, believe me, it don't work!!!...BTW, the motor is a limp 468, that will be taken care of though!!...

I don't know the answer to the question. Most circle race flatbottoms have the stringers closer to the center of the boat than drag race boats. On Biesemeyers they are 22 inches apart, and most drag boats they are 26 inches or more apart.
You Jones Starfire guys how far apart are the stringers ? If it makes a difference in handling I bet Jones put them in the correct place.

it depends on if it is a 2 stringer or a 4 stringer. the beam and the v of the bottom. or if it is a flat bottom. just a thought.
