I'm considering going with no head unit beyond an iPod on an install.
I could just use the input sensitivity on the amps to permanently set the front/rear fade but is there an external solution for this? It would be nice if it had a subwoofer crossover with adjustable gain, as well. I adjust the sub more than I adjust the fade.
Of course, it will need to have volume control as well, since I intend to use a flex dock with bottom connector.

You do lack the fine tuning, but I did this in our Rhino and it has worked out great. I'm running a 4 channel amp with 2 6.5's and a 10" sub and it sounds surprisingly good. I did this because I knew the sand in Glamis would just beat the head unit to shit.

The solution is the new Alpine IDA-X001.
I just bought one of these for the boat yesterday. Looks cool...how do they perform? Does anyone know if they have a remote?

The best stereo head unit I have ever had. Freat iPod interface, super easy to navigate and use. Alpine makes a waterproof wireless RF remote that works great with them.

Very cool. I didn't know the new remote worked with them. Now I have to take the two hard wired ones out..

I'm looking at the Blaupunkt Melbourne.
It's a head unit, without CD player. The price is right.
I won't need to bring the Ipod, just an SD card full of music.
If that get's jacked, it only a $30 card.

As of yet the rf remote is not going to play nice with the pac piece working on it though.

What is pac? Are you talking about linking the hard and rf remotes together or the rf remote alone?

The pac is used to make the sony or cps hard wired remote work with the alpine head unit and will not work with the rf receiver as of yet. The rf remote will work fine with the alpine as will the hard wired remotes but not together.

Just put one in our SR-22 project and it is badass, not only will it run an ipod, but you can also load music (mp3s) on to any USB flash drive and plug it in also. The thing is badass, and not bad for 400 bucks, no cd player in it.

Thanks for the info. fyi, I paid 280 plus shipping on ebay. Hopefully it is as advertised. I picked up the remote for around 80.

How is the RF remote working on the boat. I have the older IR remote, and it does not work well in the sun.
Always been an Alpine guy, and have considered the new unit since the day it came out. I'm running the 9835 right now but never use the CD player. I'm just not sure whether I'm ready to give up the EQ.

That looks like a nice control unit. I've always liked Audio Control. It's too bad it's 1/2 din. It would be nice if they would make something like that Alpine unit that would fit in a regular dash hole.

I should have posted the Three.1 it has the built in sub crossover. still it's half din also. Nothing a sheet of ABS and a dremel couldn't cure ;)
I like Audio Control gear too. 12+ years on my Epicenter no problems what so ever. You should hear it on the EL36s @ about 1500w @8ohm. Good lord you could scramble the neighbors eggs with it.
Anyhow , good luck with the project....

No problem. I found the Three.1. It looks perfect for my purposes.
