Can you explain a little about the motor that you posted in the readers rides section?
Thanks

We are having an arguement in another chat room and they think its part of an intercooler

The theory behind it is this. Buick nailheads have small exhaust valves with no room to put larger ones in. So we reversed the flow and push the intake charge in thru the exhaust port with the blower and exhaust out the old intake valves. The part the blower is sitting on is just part of the intake manifold. There is a section on the bottom of the intake manifold that has water running thru it to help deflect the heat from the exhaust manifolds . All the work was done by my brother and myself. The cam was ground by Howard Cams.

Quite innovative and clever but how does it run? Does it make any more power than it would if the engine were to be set up in a conventional manner?

yes the engine runs harder than when we had it running the regular way. we went to alot taller gear in the v-drive 23% and more prop 14.5 pitch steel three blade and still picked up 1000 rpm. besides that is quite a conversation piece. Plus just seeing if we could do it was worth it. I think if we had stayed with 16% in the v-drive and used a say 15 pitch three blade we might have been better off but it still runs in the 70's with a very heavy boat

The ole nailhead is a neat motor but there is not alot you can do with them to get them to turn alot of R's. They were designed to run at low rpm with good torque. We're getting alittle over 5 with this combo running thru a turbo 400 and 23% in the v-drive. 14.5 steel three blade. I'm sure if i changed to 16% in the v-drive I'm sure it would turn alot more. Rather keep the r's down at have it live alittle longer.

63 Stevens, my dad ran a 62 or 63 with a i think a 322 nail head dont hold me to it. ANYWAY AT MARINE STADIUM prior to rudy ramos and N.D.B.A. I think if i recall long beach race and ski club or something like that.. With that junk yard motor that little boat ran 68 M.P.H through the lights probably in the air ha ha.. I think he has a time slip for that because him and my uncle rodger jumped class in the boat... I would like to get my hands on a old stevens and restore it for my pops...

Also saw reverse cam flathead V8 once in a boat, but never heard it run. That was a great idea, geting the hot exhaust gasses away from the water jackets on the old flattie. Of course in doing this, it dumped them right in the drivers face........[/QB]It was quite common to reverse the flathead V8s, there were several on the salt and they used to turn up occasionally in a hot rod - those guys were fairly adventurous back then.
63 stevens,
tell me what is going on with the exhaust,
the supercharger feeds through what what were the exhausts. The intake becomes the exhaust and you are using wastegates to regulate boost? Who made the camshaft?

it's a 401 and right now the only thing i have left for the buick is a set of edelbrock exhaust manifolds and one rear motor mount but i'm going to hold on to them. I know that ta performance in arizona has performance parts for the ole nailheads. TAPerformance.com
