What should I know about using a 1 million candlepower spotlight at night...are there any laws restricting such use on a boat???

Pretty much illegal to use any spotlight on a boat, as it blinds other boaters.

That is what I thought, but what about a red lense spot light?

Probably even more illegal then just the white one, becuase red & green are navigational lights.
You could try blue, but that'd be impersonating an officer... Pretty much no hope for the bajillion candle power lights on a boat. ;)

I can't find any regulation that it's illegal to use a spotlight on a boat. i can see where the improper USE of one is illegal, though. I use one and am very careful not to blind oncoming boats. When I shine it, I don't do it to SEE their boat, but so I'm SEEN. It's easier for them to avoid me if I haven't burned out their retinas. :D

You can only use a spotlight to illuminate hazards to warn other boaters, or to light up a pier or landing when you're approaching to dock.
Navigation Rules prohibit shining a spotlight at the pilothouse or helm area of a boat underway.

i use one just to double check the shores going up or down the river at night on parker. just a quick few second flash on the bank to know where im at.
