Where are you located? There are a number of organizations and clubs across the country. Most of the organiztions or clubs are somewhat gegraphical in nature.
Some tend to cater to "PRO" boats, others are more open for entry level and what has become to be known as ramp clutter.
Most of the boat racers are pretty good guys and will try to help get you started and involved if you wish.

I can help you with the first step: Go make a ton of money. You'll need it. ;) :D

You'll need to join APBA and a local club (SCSC) when your ready.
Next race is Long Beach Marine Stadium, Aug. 12-13. Get there early, talk to the racers, don't be shy they'll help you.
Might want to start out in Nostalgia (unfortunately they will not likely be in Long Beach) it's a great stepping stone to start, they'll be in Bakersfield in Oct.
