Them varmits are a lot bigger then mine. 87 confirmed kills this year.... Ground squirrles and bunny rabbits. I am over run with them and me and the boy have a blast playing sniper around the ranch with our 1000 per second air rifles.:D A couple years ago the neighbor planted 5 acres of corn and the squirlyy fawkers ate every bit of it.... That was a good air rifle hunting year around the Knoll ranch.:D

How about Porterville, four of us with 204's and .17 with about 300 kills in a day.
Had two kills (squirrels) at over 350 yds with the 204, its a bug killer!!!

It's a bobcat--note the spots on the underbelly and rear legs and apparent lack of a lenghty tail and small stature. And .300 Weatherby shooting 55 gr (bullets) at 4,000 fps? If that's what you meant, I don't think so. You'd need a sabot to shoot a 55 gr bullet in a .300 Weatherby. And since you can shoot 110's at 3800 fps out of a .300 Weatherby, a 55 gr. with a sabot would exceed 4,000 fps--if the sabot survived the trip. But, the accuracy would be awful (worse that the Remngton Accelerator in .30/06 and .308 Win which yielded 2 MOA accuracy at best). Yes, I do get pissy when it comes to firearms ballistics.

I dunno, looks like a cougar or florida panther to me. The head looks wrong for a bobcat -- doesn't have the jowls (see pic below). But the spots do look bobcatish. Might be one of the inbred southern things

Nicked prop,
I usually try not to get pissy about anything and when I do I double check my self to make sure I don't step on my dick like you just did. You may want to re-read my post. It's very short I think it reads in part as follows:."..my .204 Ruger 4,000 ft/sec with a 40 grain bullet." Nothing stated about 55 gr or a .300? ( Must have been the alcohol)
I don't mind be corrected at all ,as long as it's deserving.;)
Lastly, If that's a "F"iiing Bob cat they don't make them like that in So-Cal. I have seen quite a few and none looked like that. I think it's something else. Or as Hokeyson stated:" Must be one of them in-bred Southern things"

Any thoughts on a 7MM or 6MM or a .270 for long range 250-350 yrds for ground hogs?

Funny, we were at buddies place in Porterville, hes got a range set up in a field out to 300 yds, bench under the trees, standing in cow shit up to your ankles...man it was livin!!!
Zero'ed at 200, shot about 3-4 high at 325-350 yds, killed the first one in one, the second was about the same yardage and one missed, didnt know where, second one bullseye, one good thing about squirrels, they sometimes are not smart enough to run!! These were reloads from a friend of mines 13 years old kid, they were great, but I found the factory stuff shoots very well.
The kid was using 32 gr bullets with 4895, we crono'ed them a 3900 (plus or minus 20fps). These wre from a model 77 and the rsults were the same from a number 1.

Well, CP, looks like you figured it out even though Wheeler edited his post to be closer to reality (110's at 4000 out of a .300 WM is probably doable with handloads, but likely exceeds SAAMI presssure spec's by a fair amount). And the cat is indeed a warm weather, ratty-ass, immature bobcat with a subprime pelt. HokeySon's link showed a mature bobcat with a prime (or at least more prime) pelt.

Ok, but you're still not running 55's at 4,000 with a .22-250. I own one. And a .220 Swift. And a chronograph. The .220 Swift will outrun the .22-250 by a little bit. Neither one approaches 4,000 with 55's with even the stoutest of safe handloads (did I mention I get pissy when it comes to firearms and external balistics?).

I loaded the .300 at max loads according to the Hornady manual, as I recall velocity was right at 4k fps.. This was not for daily shooting, only one time out some squirrel shooting in Corona. I do not recall the fps. of the 22/250 as this was done in 1980, a long time ago to remember the facts and fiction can sometimes be more memorable.

Well, kind of if you don't know what you're doing--choosing the wrong bullets (designed for a less robust cartridge), have an exceptionally rough barrel, barrel twist that is too fast for bullet, etc. In reality, it's quite easy to successfully drive .224 copper jacketed bullets well over 3500 fps without the bullets coming apart. The .220 Swift, for example, was introduced as the first factory round exceeding 4,000 fps over 70 years ago. Successfully. And, bullet technology has improved tremendously in that 70+ years making it even easier to drive jacketed bullets to 4,000 fps and beyond . Call the ballisticians at Sierra bullets 1-800-223-8799 if you think I'm "pissing in the wind" rather than making an attempt (fruitless it seems) at stamping out firearms ignorance. Or, you can continue to perpetuate fallacies.

Good pic! You're right, there is a tail...which doesn't fully develop until over 6 mos. I still don't believe it's a bobcat. They have pointed and furry faces, this guy has a very defined jaw line and a wide nose. I also can't imagine a little bobcat hunting a pig... Just my opinion :)

No soapbox, but if you consider the notion that jackets get ripped off .224 bullets at anything over 3500 fps "new knowledge" so be it. I imagine if someone posted their opinion that the earth is flat you'd sh*t your pants with excitement at the "new knowledge" you just gained. After all, it is Hot Boat and not a gathering of he Mensa Society. And, no, results don't really vary to the extent you're suggesting, otherwise all those 100 mph jetboats on ebay would never be questioned/laughed at. No wonder Froggy gave up on the (correct) notion that you never point a firearm at anything you don't mind shooting.
I'll forego the pat on the back (seems a little creepy to have people I don't know touching me--other than at a massage parlor anyway) but you can always buy me a beer if we cross paths.
PC--Upon further review, you're likely right. The head shape is more that of a cougar and its tail may not have been visible in the photo. Sure is a scraggly fella either way.

Here is my reasoning. The whiter underbelly is common of the bobcat. The lighter coloring tan is more common with a desert cat. The black trim around the tips of the ears is not found on a cougar. The spots of a young cougar the size this cat is have pretty much faded to almost nothing. The white coloring on the lower jaw area is bobcat. I've hunted with hounds for 25 years and have caught and looked at a pile of cats both bobcat and cougar.

:jawdrop: :D :D Can't the black trim be shadow though? Hmmmm.....:D

It's a bobcat--note the spots on the underbelly and rear legs and apparent lack of a lenghty tail and small stature. .
Nicked prop,
I meant to post this yesterday. A good friend who is a world class hunter, tracker, guide and taxidermist backs you up: it's a Bobcat.
"Looks like a Summer phase bobcat from Southtexas or some climate zone like that" he said. I'll take his word on it. He knows his shit.

Maybe they are more pest than Varmints, but the damn gophers have found my new front lawn after almost 2 years of being in the new house:mad: . Since I only get alittle statisfaction seeing the dead little basterd's in the old sytle gopher traps, this morning I stood on one of the landscape boulders with my Ruger 10/22. Well, one less gopher in the front yard as of 7:20 am.:D And he thought he found himself a nice new home :( :( :( I'll head back to the back yard this evening.

I think...Cougar...
Even though cousin JBB has done quite well with his southern retrainin sometimes his yankee upbringing comes out.
Ain't no wild mountain lions been round here in long time...Bobcats are common though. That one has light colors, but most of the ones I seen are either during deer season or shot during season and are now glued to a piece of wood.
That's looks like peanut growing kind of land, and varmits like michigan strain deer are plentiful on that kind of stuff, but eatin feral swine sounds like a notch or two below possom or nutria.
Tom, dove is good eatin. Shoot weekend is in september sometime. Fock the no vacation policy...Come on down.

You don't want her anyway. She's starting to acquire some of them yankee attitudes up there in Virginia.
