I am building a 25x30 pond with a waterfall in the backyard...the hole is dug, landscaped around with Redwoods etc and a dock in the opposite end of the waterfall. Im almost ready to put the lining in it and arrange the rock, but I'd like some ROCK and PLANT ideas. It will be decked (around the edges) with Arizona Flagstone.. I've looked online and got some great idea's but I'd like to see more pics if you have a pond.

I prefer the full effect of a large pond T. Don't forget to shut the hose off cause it makes it a mess.

I believe it is 50,000 gallons, you can only see the bottom half of the pond. It supplies water to a private fire hydrant (required by F.D.), at my parents home in Wilsonville, Or...

Traci, I was bored so I went through some pics on the net.:D
I helped my dad build a pond in there old house.. The rock formation is not that hard. you just have to have the ones that look like they fit like a puzzle.
It does take some time. We put some together then we would cement them then some more.. Kind of a step by step..:D :D
Wish I was closer to help ya..

A couple tips:
Buy THICK liner with a warranty and don't cut it after it is installed. Instead use it to keep weeds from growing through your rocks around the perimiter.
Lay an extra layer of cheap plastic down before you lay the liner. It's cheap insurance!
Another trick that I use is a shallow shelf around the edge about 6 inches deep. I lay rocks on the shelf in the water to give the illusion that the rocks go all the way to the bottom.
Buy anough plants and lillies to cover 75% of the surface in order to keep a clear pond.
If you use a waterfall, filter the water through pea gravel and marsh plants before it goes back to the main body.
For low maintenance, install an automatic filler similar to what they use in a toilet to keep the water full.
One of the most important tips is to go as big as possible right off the bat. I have never had a customer say that they wanted to go smaller, but I have torn out several small ponds and dug them bigger. It sounds like you have this one nailed though.

Ole Dave hit it on the head, I love my pond, and I love my fish, but the fricken raccoons and egrets love them more. In Placentia the raccoons live in the curb drains, and love to eat KO. I set up a motion light with an alarm, and at 2 in the morning it goes off, I jump out of bed and grab my trusty little .22 with a laser and a noise reducer on it and its "GAME ON". The raccoons win!!!
The bastards tear up the pond, the plants get trashed, the rocks get knocked over, they are a real pain in the ass.
You need to build a rock "den" that's deep enough that the raccoons cant get to the fish. It helps but its not the cure all.

Thanks, I hadn't thought of leaving the lining (not that there will be much left, damn they are expensive too!) I am using a cattle watering trough (sounds crazy but it looks cool) with pea gravel and plants to filter. I'll take pics of it all when I through.

Be careful with those Redwoods. The root system gets under everything and wreaks havoc. Then when the trees mature they drop all kinds of crap which is very acidic and kills off any vegetation that cannot live in an acidic soil. I grew up on the North Coast of California and we felt Redwoods belonged in one of two places. A state or national park or a sawmill.

One less place they can protest in...... remember that Butterfly biatch that lived in the tree for a year? That was about 2 miles from my parents place. Right after that some idiot kid went to a logging site to protest and a logger dropped a Doug Fir on him. Flattened his young butt into the ground so far they almost didn't have to bury him. His mother tried to sue the logging company but he was trespassing on private land and assumed all responsiblity. Ah hell, what's this have to do with a pond? Just ranting...

Don't be so sure....private land or not - I have 5 acres and a very LARGE old oak tree in the back of it. Its leaning over into my neighbors acreage and I was afraid it might take the fencing out in a big storm so I wanted to cut it down. Mentioned it to the same neighbor and he called the county on me. Apparently in our county you have to get PERMISSION TO CUT the larger Oaks EVEN ON YOUR OWN property! I couldn't believe it!

No shiat. I don't tell anyone that I am going to cut down a tree... just hire the damn company and have them remove it before anyone knows what happened.:D
I also need to take one out.. I ain't telling no one. As far as my neighbors are concerned me and tree are pals. ;)
FATBOY.. remember the guy that fell out of tree and really hurt himself.. dumb ass. they are currently have a tree sitting on the Berkeley Campus. I guess they want to cut down some trees to build a new stadium. The news footage is classic.

They only trim them if they are in the power lines. Otherwise they need to be checked for "historical value".

Exactly. AND, not sure if this is true but I was told that if a PG&E crew (or anyone) gets hurt trimming a tree that belongs to you because it interupts power lines, they can legally sue YOU in a private claim. Anyone know if thats true or not?

Be careful with trees on property lines. Notify your insurance agent and send a certified letter to your neighbor that you feel an overhanging tree could cause some damage in the event of a natural disaster. If the neighbor objects to your removing it then he assumes any responsibility for damage to his property. Same thing with root systems. In Eureka the redwood roots from a adjoining property crept under the foundation of a neighbors house and lifted the foundation over a period of 10 years. Caused $100,000 in damage. If you cut the roots and the tree falls onto an adjoining property you are at fault unless you received permission from the trees owner to sever the root system..

PG& E contracts with trimmers. If you call and tell them of a potential problem they will send a surveyor to check it out. Then it is the utilities responsibility to trim the problem. Trimmers carry insurance so you are not at risk. It is best to be pro active with trees around power lines, gas lines, water lines etc.
