Our new boat has the aft white lite on top the tower (where the ski rope attaches), but also has the rear plug with a plug in white lite-on-a-rod kept in stowage.
The front green & red are dedicated in the hull shark eye style.
Is the tower white lite sufficent for nite running, or do we need to bust out & plug in the way-aft white lite too when underway?

If that light on top is a 360 light, and remains on while the Nav lights are on then you should be good to go.
Point in fact legally I think up on top like that would be the only way to go on a wakeboat. I'm pretty sure the 360 light has to be some minor distance above the tallest thing in the boat (including passengers) to prevent any kind of interference with the light.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but Dave is right.
As long as the light shows 360 degrees around the horizon, is aft of and is at least 1 meter higher than the bow lights, then you're OK.
You probably have the stern light receptacle because those boats are offered with different styles of wake towers, and some don't have the light on top. Putting the stern light socket in, also allows you to take the tower off, and still be legal when running at night.

Does the white light have to be on while under power or just when anchored or moored:confused:

I'm going out on a limb and say under way - which would also include floating down the river in Parker - once anchored, just a single white light.
That old "under way" thing comes in alot!

360 light has to be on at all times while under power. Technically while anchored the bow lights should be off, and the 360 light should be on by itself.
Damn near 99% of boaters don't know this though, and if your boating on a local party lake/river and your anchored just leave them all on (my opinion).

There it is.
Coming back at nite from pizza at Buckskin with the kids we pass all kinds of floaters & drifters on the water,, no idea at all they're there, zero speed in the water.
No lites, nothing.
Ya hope someone takes a long drag from their Pall Mall to see the glow.

RDEven for the 99% who don't know, if they can read their switches they might get a clue. :) (The switches are typically labeled "NAV" to indicate the red/green/white running lights and "ANCHOR" for the all-around white anchoring light.)
By the way, leaving them all on when not underway is going to fake out other boaters, since the configuration of lights are designed so others can tell what direction other boats are heading. :) I recommend using just the anchor light when not underway.

Years ago I was running to Sundance in the Nordic, and I happened to see something small flash a couple times, then a small glow then it went out.. I slowed from my already ridiculously slow speed of 18mph becuase I wasn't sure what the hell that tinkerbell looking thing I just saw was..
Bunch of morons floating down river in a dark colored boat (no moon) with zero lights on.. Only reason they are still here to talk about it is becuase one of them lit a cigarette. Not a doubt in my mind I would've ran them all over if it wasn't for that. After an exchange of words they turned their lights on, we went up river about a 1/4 mile and saw I saw them turn them back off.. Unbelievable..
JackPunx was driving us to the bar one night and we almost took out a conquest. We went back and I was screaming at the guy etc.. etc.. He turned em on, we left and as soon as we are outta ear shot the boat vanishes back into thin air?? What these people are thinking is beyond me?

All navigation lights need to be on when underway. Under power has nothing to do with it.
Underway means "Not Anchored, Moored, or Aground".
If you are drifting with the engine off you are still underway, and proper navigation lights should be lit.
And it's not technically. It's Legally. When anchored in or near an area commonly used for navigation, the anchor light should be illuminated, and the running lights (red/green bow lights) should be off.

We have discussed this before...thinking is NOT a requirement to operate a boat!!
