Charging Questions???

I installed 2 new batteries, a perko switch and alt. Now at idle my alt is charging at 15v and at speed its charging at 18v. Please help!!!!
(The alt. has a batt. wire, alt light wire and excite wire.) the alt light has not been connected.

It mite help to know what alternator you have.
But if I had to guess, it sounds like your full fielding the alternator (makes alt. put out max voltage). Try running it without the excite wire connected and see if it charges properly. If that doesnt help the regulator is bad. Unless it is adjustable.

What alternator is it? Ford and Chryslers need regulators

Found the problem. The excite wire was wired to the gauge and it was out putting 10v instead of 12.(WTF??) So I changed it to the key switch that has 12v and it works great. Thanks for the replys!!!
