I dont fully understand what the purpose of stepping the bottom of a hull serves? I assume it has to do with freeing up the hull but i dont grasp the conept of the hull getting higher toward the back of the boat.

Wow that's a good question...maybe post it in the Cats and Tunnels section and see what the guru's and knuckleheads say. :D

I believe that the hull getting higher in the back coupled with a high X demension causes more lift, thus a drier botom and less drag.
Just my .02. Nothing I would take to the bank

The step helps to aerate the hull which means there is less wetted surface which means less drag which means more efficiency which means greater speeds.
