We build Web Servers... Norton is just horrible. It is like AOL, Tries to run every program you touch... and crashes most of them... For residential purposes... Grisoft (AVG) is extremely effective when coupled with Lavasoft adaware.
Those are the free ones, they work fine...

Norton is great... if you don't mind using 75% of your resources on anti-virus.
My preferred anti-virus software is Linux.

Here:
NOD32 (http://www.nod32.com/home/home.htm)
We use Symantec for most our businesses for reasons of it is well known, but I am not big on the Norton stuff and that home user security suite is just a PIG! Trash! It blows goats! We have been using trend micro Suite and it weems to run well and even removed the old MacAfee on deployment. The link for nod32 is one of the best, just not a mainstream company.

The AVG you pay for is even better. I used the free one for a while and really liked it so I sprung for the upgrade. Updates come all the time so they are staying on top of things.

I've run Macaffee AV since my 1st computer, 2000, never had any problems. I do not run anyone's "security suites". I have handpicked a software firewall (not a free one but problem free and very solid as well (it watches what LEAVES my PC as well as what comes in)), I run behind a hardware firewalled router as well these days, and I keep 3 or 4 anti-spyware programs arround (all free and manual) because none seem to get everything but between them, they seem to have all bases covered. I DO however prefer Norton's utility maintenace programs and use those sans firewall/anti-virus functions. I use yet a seperate pop-up controll program. None of mine have ever showed any interference issues. 3 hand-built PC's run this way here, as well as an HP laptop.

Here are this months reviews of AV software and how they performed and what they cost. The results may surpise you. In my experience, the top performers change about every 3-6 months.

If you are anywhere withing the top 5 or 6, you are in pretty good hands. I can't believe that today, there are STILL foolish people who don't run one AT ALL. Just last week had one sitting in my yahoo mail account from some stranger, an old one to after I researched it @ Mcaffee's info site.
THIS is scarry:
http://mastdb4.mcafee.com/VirusMap3.asp?Cmd=Map&b=IE&ft=PNG&lang=en
Currently in the US & Canada in the past 30 days, there are over 1,000 infected PC's per million citizens. S America is the same, Mexico only slightly better at 100-1,000 per million population.
Most of Europe is 100-1,000 per million citizens.

I've been using McAfee, but they wanted too much to continue the subscription for another year. I just installed Defender Pro 5-in-1 2006. Updates every 3 hours, has anti-spam, virus, spyware, plus firewall and a PC optimizer.
