View Full Version : What hours do you work?

As a business owner I always hear from others how great it must be to set my own hours and get to take off whenever I want.
This always gives me a chuckle, and a sarcastic "yeah right" is my reply. My customers won't be too happy with me if I really had such freedom.
My day is typically 7:30 to 6:00. Sometimes I go home a little early sometimes a little late. I might to some paperwork at night at home, but usually I'm pretty burned out by the end of the day.

I'm on the 3-12 schedule. I work 12 Hours a day 3 days a week. Yes that's right.....I have 4 days off a week. Needless to say, I love my job.:D

I am in the same boat as you Rich... so to speak.
I work 6 days, more often 7. Sometimes "work" is going to the river, which is nice, but being engaging and available for that entire period... not to mention completely sober makes it decidedly more "work-like".
Standard day is starting at 8:00, no lunch, everyone leaves at 5:00. I go work out for a couple of hours and come back to work at 7:00 or so. Work until 9:00 with Audrey here and then go have dinner and go home.
Weekends, when not working at the river are ususally having appointments with prospective clients or interested parties to see the boat and facilities and working on catchup during the day. We are usually out of here by 7:00 on weekends, but can spend 3-4 hours with each client very, very easily. If a test-ride is in order, it can go much longer... often until dark. Then you clean up the boat.
This is by far the hardest I have ever worked, including the SEAL teams. It is also the least amount of money I have ever made.

unfortuantely the nature of the business for me is 24/7.
There will be times where I have a month off, but then I will literaly work a month straight with no break. Technically I have a 9-5 salary job.....but that is just on paper. My phone usually starts ringing at 4am and stops about midnight (our time, I work nationally) and that is Mon-Sun.

Same boat.... LOL. I remember when I started out, it was similar. I was at work til 10:00pm often. Sometimes up till 11:00 writing up estimates and such. The first years are the hardest for sure. Its always "on" meaning there's very little slack off time. Sure we can go get some beers once a month or so but its usually just busy as can be all damn day.
I could sit at this desk for 4 days straight and not be as caught up as I'd like to be.

RB, what do you do?
Im a project manager. I figured when our company sold they would let me go (since I am one of the higher paid PMs) but they decided to stick me with a national role. which adds to a lot more travel and way more hours.
It does pay the bills though so I cant complain too much :)
We went from west US to Nation wode pretty much over night, so it has been pretty crazt around here lately.

Straight commission for 20 years and the company isn't doin' so great but that's not my part of the problem! I don't understand why anyone would do anything else.... not havin' to manage anybody, no office politics, make a payroll, worry about all that P&L stuff...you be the boss and pay the contract! I'll take your money and keep you profitable!
When I got this gig I worked 50 hour weeks and made more money but my priorities have changed. I've had some clients for 18 years.

I try not to be grading papers on the weekends, but usually around report card time it works out that way. But I have between 180-190 kids during the day. When they have to write their research reports at the end of the year, I spend about 15 minutes grading each one. That's only 4 an hour. It's pretty time consuming.

If I have work, I'm working...
normally 10-16 hour days 6 or 7 days a week. Some times I get lucky and I am able to plan for day off. Normally its feast of famine... I am ether turning down work or have nothing...( or I should say little shit.)
Today was the great, just one inspection...Tomarrow is going to be about the same, sundays off and monday... well lets just say monday is going to be fun... 55 yds of gravel and sand have to be wheel barreled from the front of the house to the back where the spetic tank is being abandoned... there is barly room for the wheel barrel...hell had to have the little track hoe craned over the house to get it to dig it out for the new line/ find the tank...( oh yeah fooking HISTORIC homes suck any other I would have just cut out a section of the stone wall) The city trans dept was not too happy with me for about 20 mins... Seems like they don't like 2 rows of traffic being blocked off by a crane. :D Every thing was all good once the untilitys got there...

I'm still payin my dues so to say. I've been running parts from 6:30AM until to late every day lately. Late means past 10:00PM. I'm open most Saturdays. Also hit car shows/swapmeets at least 2 Sundays a month to promote. A Sunday at Pomona starts leaving the house at 4:30AM and getting back home around 2:30. Seems like a full day to me.

Usually 6 am to 4:30 pm. Unless I have to irrigate, then its when ever I get the water to when the feild is fully flooded. Depending on the field, it could be 8 hours up to 18 hours. Some times I piggy back the field, and get a couple of them irrigated at the same time or right ofeter each other, just depend how much of a head of water the cannel has.
One week could be 50 hours the next 60 then the next 80.
After harvest, walnuts, in october I might get to work 50 hours but more like 30. Then I sell firewood to make up the differance, and then some.

7th grade History :) My goal this year is more "self assessment" by the students this year. But, of course, that won't include their research papers. It is interesting to see what they write. Some of them are very good and that is rewarding. Others. . . T/As are a godsend. I hate to have them in my class because I feel they aren't learning anything during that period, but I'm sure happy to have them. :D

Some of them are very good and that is rewarding. Others. . . T/As are a godsend. I hate to have them in my class because I feel they aren't learning anything during that period, but I'm sure happy to have them. :D
I love history. That is what I majored in. I thought I wanted to teach history, but then I taught middle school. I hated it. I don't know how the kids are in your district. Lets just say mine is a small district. Kinda like Mayberry. The schools are very political. Children and Grandchildren of board members and city council attend the schools. It sucks. The parents feel they should have some kind of special treatement. Parent involvement is good, but not at my school. Many kids are pains in the ass. Starting my Master's program this year. It will be a cohort through Long Beach State at one of the schools in my district. Once I am done, I will be looking for a job somewhere else. I am expecting to have the ADD child of a board member this coming year. His parents don't believe in medication. It will suck. Most kids are great, but two bad apples can make it difficult to teach. I pray every night for a good year.
