I fired it up last night for the first time. Easiest starting new engine I've had. It just snapped to life. I've got an oil leak to deal with (damn intake manifolds!), but nothing major. A buddy dialed in about 1,000 rpm's of blower surge. Man what a GREAT sound that is, 800 to 1,800rpm's, up n down up n down, very cool !!! Hopeing to get it wet next weekend and see how she feels. Here's a bunch of pix of it.

521 Ford, Jim Guthrie Racing prepped carbs, Hampton 8:71, Blue Thunder heads, Lightning wet pipes. I had a buddy paint and clear coat the block, throttle linkage, fuel dist block, and the headers in Imron. The look incredible in person.

Not much room for my back seat, blower belt, mechanical fuel pump lines, remote oil lines, water lines for the headers and wiring, but it fit.

All new AutoMeter Pro-Comp Marine gauges.
http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q90/DaytonaTunnel/CIMG0292.jpg
I added Boost, oil temp, and fuel pressure gauges. There's wasn't enough room on the helm for all of the new ones w/o cramming the gauges together. I put a lot of time measuring where to add the new hardware. I wanted it to look as though it would of came that way. There wasn't enough room for all of them, so I dropped the volt gauge down below the back seat. I can still see it when I need too.

Can't wait to start picking off the Chevy's eh?;)
Just one question, what causes blower surge and how do you get it?

yeah, NICE BOAT!!!...isnt blower surge when the blower builds up PSI in the intake and then the engine quickly goes wham!...or something like that...

Blower surge is a rich condition and is normal at idle...
But I noticed alot of Blowermotors don't have any surge?

Thanks for the props. Not a big fan of the Dooley scoop. I like to be different, and what better way than velocity stacks ? You don't see them every day:) .
I'll say that it was a long hard battle getting it done. Honestly, I'm a Ford guy through and through, and putting a Ford in a `21 was pretty tuff. Adding a blower made it even tuffer. But in the end it was well worth the effort.
How many blown `21 Daytona's are running around ???

The boat looks great, nice job !!!!
2 things stand out:
1. You may want to space out the bottom blower pulley, the belt is riding on the end or may slightly be over the bottom pulley, hard to tell from the pics
2. Why didn't you install a Jet Away

I need to just slide the idler back a little bit. Still have enough room to do so.

Absolutly no room ! I searched for a couple months trying to find the old style driveline. Using the old style allowed me to keep my back seat in it's current place.

same here. i had to move my seats up @5inchs to clear the lower blower pulley , i couldn't run a backseat with a jetaway at all:( '
your full tunnel should shut down fine anyways without 1:)

What if the motor seizes at 100 mph?

The blower surge is only partially normal at idle. You need to have the power valve in the carb boost referenced instead of being vacuum referenced as it is now. I did find a link once that walks you through it. Just search for it.

i've ran outta gas in mine at near 90 and it sets down easy, and straight;) when i get it back together, i will find a nice big stretch of smooth water, go wot and then lift to see how my boat reacts to it. everybody should try to get to know the quirks of how their boats handle on hard shut downs. besides, i won't be runnin more than 55-60mph max 99% of the time anyways, my kids go with me almost all the time.i'm not 1 of the ignorant dumbasses you see getting shiat faced and showing off, i never drink enough at the lake to get drunk;) if i do, the wife drives:eek: :D and i love my kids too much to drink that much lol:D :D :D

boost reference'n isn't necessary sometimes. a homie from here on ***boats helped me set my carbs up without boost reference'n and they outperform my buddies high $$$ holley blower carbs;) i've got a a/f gauge too with 2 o2 sensors that prove you don't have to boost reference to get a nice a/f ratio at all rpm levels, under acceleration , at idle or decel.just gotta know how to tune em in, i had someone take the time and write it all down for me in plain english which really helped!now that i understand it, it'll be a breeze tuning any 4150's sitting on a roots.

I had 'em boost referenced to improve cruising. Not a carb guru by any stretch, but everything I'd read and been told is it helps. I'm also told that w/o boost referencing you can get a much more violent blower surge. I can remove the blower surge by adjusting the carbs. But that'd be crazy IMO, I've dialed in as much as possible:D :D :D
P.S. Mechanical 172gph fuel pump rwyyattb

not really, mine only surges 7-800rpms and my a/f ratio is at @12.5-13 to 1 range at idle.seems like the harder they surge at idle , the more violent it would be on the bearings. but i'm with ya, who'd want a blown motor in a boat without the surge:D :D everyone stares at a nice blown boat surging at the ramp:devil: :D

I've basically been working on this thing since last September when I purchased it from BLOWN88FRESNO MINI. I've gone through it stem to stern, and basically replaced everything. I plan on keeping it ofr a long long time, and just decided to do it right from the getgo. All new cables, stereo, pump (AA), the whole damn thing. I went overboard (as I usually do) and even went to far as to replace every fastener on the boat and trailer with some sort of stainless allen head. I studded and double drilled the snoot. When doing so I ran every stud in, marked and cut them accordingly so each one has the exact same distance sticking out (running a wedge so different lengths were needed). I studded the scution housing to bowl as well, that will hardly be seen, but looks trick. Added stinger washers to places that don't need/use them for detail.
Now if the damn rain would stop I can get it wet. Planning to take it out the first time this coming Friday (skipping work) with a bunch of other N/Wer's. I'll be pretty cautious, as this is my first time driving a tunnel, let alone a real powerful engine. We'll see how the day goes, maybe I can get a pass or two in under boost ???

Is there a plate between your Lightning headers and your Blue Thunder Heads. Also, can measure the outside distance between your headers. I have a Ford in my boat and want to put blue Thunder Heads with Lightning Exhaust but I'm afraid I will lose my two jump seats next to the motor. I like the old school look of my interior.
Thanks in Advance.

Great lookin boat:devil:
If you ever plan on having people in the back seat you should look into a blower belt cover:idea:
I made one up out of aluminum and a few brackets, its important so that belt wont grab hair, fingers, bikini top;)
Have fun, I really liked the power gain in my boat with the blower too:devil:

I know I need a belt cover, back seat is pretty much useless right now for safety sake. Over the winter I'll be making a top for it. The plan is to have it sit flat across the deck and notch out where the engine needs it. I plan on making an aluminum shroud on the outside of the belt and tying it into the top. I want to have a clear lexan cover for the front so I can see the pulley going round and round:D . I'm going to have poilshed stainless stell on the bottom of the top. I also want to add a very very small amount of blue neon that comes on with a whisker switch. I already have the power assembly for the top, just need to fab the top up. I know I'm way overboard, but how do I stop:eek:
HP guess, maybe 900 ??? It was going to be dyno'd before installing, but the entire build ran real long, and then the dyno shop had a problem and couldn't get to it for a couple weeks. Rather than watch what little bit of summer go by waiting, I threw it in. Only running 28* total right now (92 octane), and going to pull .5* out per pound of boost (max of 8). I'm going to pull it out over the winter and get it final tuned on the dyno.
Thanks again for the compliments all. I've been working on this thing for a LONG time, and I wanted to share my excitment with you guys. 30 hours till it gets wet...................

Yes there is a plate between the heads and headers. I picked up the Lightnings from the seller when I purchased the boat. They were for a BB Chevy. When ordering my Blue Thunder heads I had the option to get BBF or BBC exhaust ports. Since I already had a set of BBC headers, it was an easy choice. The plate is there only to buy me a little room to clear the sheet metal valve covers, nothing more. I think they will clear the Ford Racing valve covers no problem as is.
I can give you the measurements your asking for, but will that tell you what you need since I have spacers ?

SleeperCP, those were purchased right off E-Bay (for extra speed..LOL). Not Moroso's, just plain ol sheet metal covers. They came w/o polishing, and I plan on leaving them that way.
Got it out for the first time yesterday. Had a bitch of a time getting it started, but finally got it running and checked for leaks. Forgot I had the drain plugs open on the Lightning headers, but that was it, no leaks at all. I couldn't be happier with the way the boat felt, smooth as glass, responsive as hell. I got about 45 minutes run time on. Enough time to find out that thing has one hell of a tail !!! It doesn't look overly impressive from the drivers seat, but the others were going on and on about how big it was. It didn't hit home until Austin showed me some pix of it, they were right !!! I'm told it's a bit loud too. Again it didn't seem that loud from in the boat, but Austin said the exhaust tone was vibrating his bow from 150 yards away, WOW :D :D :D Skagen sure know how to set up a pump, LOAFING at 3500rpm's doing 45+mph. I never got any boost out of it, just vacuum, but it ran incredibly strong. I was just making a pass, gunna try to get boost, when the ignition box took a shit. Got towed in by 1978Rogers (THANKS for the tow Sleepy!!!). Not dissapointed at all, she ran very well. Spent the rest of the day doing what I now seem to do best, drinking beer and riding in everyone else's boat..LOL ! Pix of it on the water will be up soon.

OUTSTANDING !!! Got it out 3 times, and skipped work again today to go out Tapps. I'm very happy with the entire set up. Oil is staying clean clean clean, no water leaks into hull, smooth as freaking glass speed !!!
I think the scariest thing about my 21' is it isn't scary at speed ! The thing just takes a set and stays there. It sure instills confidence when your behind the wheel. I've had 4 riders, all say the same thing "I can't bvelieve how smooth this hull is". Like I stated before, happy as shit with this boat !
I still haven't had a gps in my hand, but it goes like stink. My bowl is drilled in three place for water pressure readings. I plan on taking some readings over at Mar-Don, and maybe playing with the nozzle ring to see what happens. I tried to stand on it from a dead stop for the first time last weekend, cavitated the shit outta it:sqeyes:. Gotta be moving just a small amount to allow it to load up. Big ass boat to try and get rollin on da water. Skagen has a 9.5" in his 21', still cav's it. I'm more than happy to spin that AA to 6200, and the rings probably aren't seated yet:D.

Sounds like its comming along nice. Mayfield is a nice lake. I'd like to run the boat there sometime. Mardon is great , lots of open water. Im thinking of heading that way next weekend. I've been wondering where to go to play with some jetboats ? (: I usually hit LK. Washington, but I never run into many perf boats out there.

08-21-2007, 07:04 AM
If you head to Mardon Labor day weekend you should see quite a few 15+ maybe. AS for local spots its the Snohomish River 10+ on the weekend or Samamish sometimes or Taps for the southend crew but Im not to familure with the lake but Im allways up for a new spot. Its usually the Snohomish for me cause its close and more fellow jets.

InspectorLance
08-21-2007, 09:55 AM
Where do you guys boat on the Snohomish river ? Is the area large and deep for a prop guy ? I've never brought the STV to LK Tapps, too many wake board boats, stumps, and jet ski's. Also I heard that Tapps has a 60 mph speed limit ? They would really love me :) I'll have to give Samamish a try.

malcolm
08-21-2007, 12:52 PM
The Snohomish is a little dicey for props, but we see people doing it all the time. We run between Everett and Snohomish, launching in Lowell. The fisherman have taken over now, but if we get any nice weekends after Labor Day (Mardon) we'll be out there. ;)

InspectorLance; Tapps is actually a lot of fun if you go on the right days. I take lots of Friday's off to play on Tapps. The lake is basically emtpy except a few fisherman, and those guys are in the stump area. There is a 60mph speed limit on the lake, but I never adhere to it :D. On the weekends it crazy, but weekdays are were its at. PM your number, I'll dial you up, would love to see your boat, after all we're neighbors.
jetovatorjeff; thanks for the compliments. I still haven't held the loud pedal all the way down for more than a couple 4-5 seconds. Be fun to really let her go and see what it can do.

Mid to upper 90's, nice job !!! That pretty damn good considering your/our hull size. Takes some pretty good oompff to get these things going that fast :D
I broke a stud on the #7 exhaust last weekend. I was told I should be "OK" w/o girdles, guess not....LOL. Girdles showed up today, installing them tomorrow with all new studs to make doubly sure. I should be gps-ing it over Labor day weekend, I too am excited to see what it'll do.

Love your ride, and even better being a blown Ford, and to top it off you had Guthrie's help.
Awesome job. Enjoy it to its fullest
