View Full Version : ***boat for cancer

I enjoy a good tumor as much as the next guy but a friend set up a ***boat team on Folding at Home and asked if I would post details on this forum.
If you're not familiar with the Folding at Home project , it is an effort to study the way proteins fold using a world wide, public participation, supercomputer that runs on spare cycles of participants.
"What happens if proteins don't fold correctly? Diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, cystic fibrosis, BSE (Mad Cow disease), an inherited form of emphysema, and even many cancers are believed to result from protein misfolding."
... so it's only partially about cancer. Really, it's broader medical research being done by the folks at Standord University.
If interested, you can join the team by downloading the client and entering our team number - 76936. The client will run in the background using your idle cycles and you won't notice it.
It's really only useful on machines that run for long periods. On something like a laptop that is turned on for a few hours a week, the results would be invalid before they could be returned. Also, if you have a really slow machine or are short on resource, it's probably not a great idea to run the F@H client as it will strain your machine even further.
There is nothing to say this project will cure cancer, or anything, or even that it will assist in any cures. It is simply a project done on faith that by lending some resource to a sharp team of medical researchers, good things will happen.

I've been running this thing for a couple of weeks now and I can't say I've noticed having it running. It takes a few days to complete the first result and another day or two to see your name on the results page.
The team was set up by sorry dog. It's great to see him venture from his typical focus on the pharmacutical side of medical research.
With four members, we are currently ranked 9461 of 74177 teams. Some guy named Liebniz seems to have joined just a few days ago and is already kicking my ass. I'm working on infecting his computer with a virus. In the mean time, please feel free to join the project and the team.

Thanks for the info, Tom. I installed this on a few of my computers here at home, so far no results have been returned yet but should be within the next day or two. Unfortunately though I don't have any of the graphics cards that are supported by the GPU version of the client as the GPUs are much better at crunching the numbers for this.

I don't think you have anything to worry from me and my aging computer farm of P3s and older P4s. I also have a 486 still running here but didn't put the client on it, I didn't think it would finish the work units before they expired. The only computer that's finished anything has been the single AMD processor system that I have and it's getting pretty dated now too. Maybe I'll have to break down and upgrade one of my systems when the new AMD Quad Core Phenom's come out.
What kind of processors are you running now?

My desktop and server are AMD X2 processors. I've got a few plain old Athlon64/939 machines around though, on my TVs, CNC mill, and my laptop is some sort of Turion (never looked closely at the model).

Then you'll be kicking my ass for sure, the AMDs always seem to have a leg up on the Intel processors for these types of calculations. I just noticed that there is a SMP client out there for the dual core processor, have you tried that out yet? I've got one Intel dual core that I'm going to give it a shot on once the current WU finishes
Here's what I've got it installed on (none of them overclocked)
P3 800mhz
Pentium M 1.6ghz
P4 1.9ghz
P4 2.67ghz
Athlon 2.2ghz
C2D E6400
As of right now the Athlon is the only one that's complete a WU

I believe Intel has the lead in floating point these days with some of the higher level parts in the Core 2 platform.
I understand AMD still has an edge on 64 bit but Core 2 has pretty much eliminated any performance gaps that used to exist with Intel having a slight edge on floating point with their fastest stuff and AMD having a slight edge on integer with their fastest stuff.
I just noticed that there is a SMP client out there for the dual core processor, have you tried that out yet?
I'm running the Linux X86_64 SMP client right now. I'm all Linux here these days (except for my laptop).

That 6400 will perform very well. You should be equal or better than my fastest machine. There are three different versions of the 6400 but they are all excellent at 32 bit floating point.
A lot of people don't realize there are different versions of the CPUs. They buy a 6400 or 6600 thinking they've got the next generation virtualization accelleration built into their hardware, since Intel makes a big deal out of these features at launch, but most of the CPUs that flow through the channel have been stripped of these features. Some of the CPUs do but most do not. Shame on Intel but I guess it's caveat empor. Intel does make great CPUs, there's no denying that.

Thanks for the info Tom, I haven't really been keeping up with the processor advancements these days. You don't need to know that much when you still use Win98 as your day to day OS :D
I did manage to get the windows SMP version installed and running on the C2D computer so we will see how it does. but it took me quite a while as the installer was a bit rough around the edges and didn't seem to play that nicely with Vista 64bit. It also is still in beta and doesn't support installing as a service or checkpointing so it may be more trouble than it's worth.

On windows, if it's running you should see a little red gear in the task tray on the bottom right like this:
http://www.***boat.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=35762&stc=1&d=1185478952
If you see that right click on it and select configure and you should see a screen like this were you can enter your userid and team number

Yeah, too bad I got 0 points for 374 of those. I put it on my PIII Celeron W2K server that I use to run my nightly backups and it took over a day to initialize but when it did it started racking up finished WU's like crazy, unfortunately they were all 0 point ones. I finally shut it down and haven't tried it again there. I also had to shut it down on my daughters AMD box because it didn't play nicely with her Halo game that she was trying to play. It seems a bit buggy to me unless it just doesn't like my motely collection of hardware I have here.

Actually both my daughters play it, but they didn't get it from me because I can't stand shooters, give me a good SRPG any day. They would actually prefer to play it on the xbox but I'm too cheap to pay the subscription fee for the xbox live service so I got Halo for the PC where they can play online for free. I did try pausing it first but that didn't work so I just shut it down completely. When I get a chance I'll try installing the console version as a service and see if that makes a difference.
So how come you aren't at the races in Gadsen this weekend?

If not, you can head down to the local housewares shop and ask for whip cream chargers so you can get that eye burning experience at home.
You can probably make a few bucks selling the rest to JBB's son...at least if he's got unbent wheels right now... :D

The laptop and desktop are making light work of this stuff, but the receptionists laptop is clearly slower with lots of time between frames and my wife's old computer that is sitting in mothballs on the internet at home says it will be done with it's work unit on November 7th... :D

Nope...I didn't make it this year, not sure if JBB did. And my eyes thanked me for not giving them another nitromethane bath :D
Yep, you can definitely rack up the points faster if you have it installed on multiple computers especially if you have smp capable processors. I reinstalled the console version on my daughters and have it running as a service and that seems to make it play nicer with her games. But even with my 5 installations it looks like Tom is still gaining ground on me. But I have my money on Nokomis to overtake him shortly, he seems to be running some serious hardware.

I have two somewhat capable computers and several more that are out of their depth with word processing. All are running it, but the ones I use for Solidworks have 2 gigs of ram apiece and tons of processor speed, so they are handily doing most of the work. My desktop has done 3 of the five work units in fact, with the fast laptop doing the other two. The slow laptops have been running since Friday and aren't even halfway through the first WU.

@572
Im just running a few plain vanilla Dell's at the office and a couple OC'd machines at home, nothing serious or exotic. Seems like mine do lots of work units but not alot of points, same as with the United Devices stuff we did.
Working out the bugs on a C2D machine that Im trying to run the console version of FAH on each core. Not sure if its the config or the 80% OC I have on it. ;) I Might try going the service route like you did or knock the OC down and see what it does.

Welcome Nokomis, good to hear from you again. I've found that the SMP version gives a lot more points per WU than the normal gui or console version. You may want to give it a try on your dual core machines, then you won't have to worry about running multiple instances. It will spawn 4 processes that will keep both cores busy. Here's a link to the FAQ for it:
http://folding.stanford.edu/FAQ-SMP.html
It's still in beta and supposedly doesn't support running under Vista as a service but in browsing through the forums a bit there is a way to get it to work. The other gotcha with it is that it doesn't support checkpointing, so if you reboot your machine or power it off on a regular basis it will have to restart from the beginning. I've lost a couple of >80% WU's that way due to my power going out from storms here.
On my non-OC'ed E6400 it's taking about 2 days to complete a SMP WU. I've also got an ATI X1950pro on order which should be here in a few days and I will be able to put it to work running the GPU client. I'd been meaning on upgrading my video card for a while and this gave me a good excuse :D

Nokomis
07-31-2007, 03:19 AM
Ill give the smp version a try, theres a nice point boost for the bigger work units used when running the smp version.
That new vid card should really up your points/day. GPU and PS3 clients are ass-kickers. I wish I had the option of running the GPU version but all my gear is Nvidia and from what I understand the FAH client has trouble with Nvidia drivers.

Im sorry I havent replied sooner, but I wanted to have a chance to go to the website and understand how this works first, as Ive never heard of this before. Im leaving the country soon and Im taking my laptop with me. I dont know how much time I will have on my laptop while Im in Kuwait, so I think I will wait til I get there before joining.

If they made a version that could run on the head unit on his truck stereo then he'd be bumping out some serious results...
Vista and the client don't seem to be very friendly with each other. The regular client worked OK for me but seemed to work at about 1/4 the rate of my XP laptop.
I just bought wifey a HP AMD X2 Laptop that had Vista...which after playing with it... I'm still trying to figure out what the "upgrades" are.
I'd reload it to XP but HP don't publish full drivers for that. I'm wondering if I give them a call and tell them that my company won't let me connect unless I run XP, if they will give me drivers then
I've got an old 700 mhz laptop that runs 2K faster than this Vista crap. I'm starting to get interested in figuring out one of those linux distos again.

In the directory where you installed it there should be a file called fahlog.txt. You can browse that to see current status of your work unit. It should update after each percentage has completed so you can guage how long it will take to finish based on how long it takes for each percent. My computers take anywhere from 10hours to 2weeks depending on the processor and WU they are working on.

Yep, that's an easer way to view status for the gui version of the client. But if you install the console version you don't get a little red flower looking deal. The txt file is created by either version.

It's both. You will hit the status page the first time they do an update after your first complete work unit.
Nobody said anything about the number of points I have versus the number of work units I've done. On one of my machines, I elected to take on really large work units that few others want to do. It's not recommended for smaller machines but I have 4GB of RAM and a couple of cores. That's why I have so many points for so few work units.

- Jordy is rocking with tons of results coming from a single machine. He must have a kicking system.

Unfortunately for the good of the team, I have decided that the way these guys are folding the proteins doesn't jive with the way I feel that they should, and the research is in direct contradiction with my rigid belief system. Lol..well I have quite a few computers and pieces that could be assembled into computers laying around that I've been too lazy to put to work as well. I really want to upgrade the wife and kid's computers but they have HP prebuilts that come with non standard motherboards and power supplies which makes it hard just to swap out a few components. don't be dissapointed... sounds like a kick'n system.
if you want to fold more, you could try the SMP version to use more of your cores. Also, a C2QE should be able to run quite a for few more Mhz without having to up voltage and keeping stability.
My points are from 3 formerly good systems that are now outdated...hopefully this will be remedied soon and DFI will finally give me my RMA after 6 months.

I do kinda miss the old days of setting twenty jumpers and connecting processor bridges with a conductive pen (and I actually made a few bucks building systems back then) but these days I think you don't even have to reboot anymore to overclock...just fire up the motherboard utility and slide the slider over a few notches.
...as for the dog...he's now 15 and lives at doggie retirement home with the inlaws...but they do have steel doors now.
BTW ... you got a Barton core I could buy off of you? Still got a Socket A system that's actually pretty good...but the best processor I got is a Tbird 2Ghz.

Anyone using Vista with the smp client?
For some reason I really want a new quad core machine (or two) ;)

572Daytona
09-11-2007, 09:27 PM
I'm running Vista with the SMP client, you have to install it as admin and if you run it as a service you also have to go into your services panel and change the service so it runs under the admin ID or another ID with admin access. I also notice that after I reboot I usually have to restart the service to get it to start processing correctly, but once it's up and running it works fine.
SD, funny you should mention the conductive pen. I just picked one up yesterday from Radio Shack so I can hardwire my E4500 to a 1033FSB since the mobo I have for it doesn't support overclocking, but will work if I bsel mod the CPU itself.
OG, that Quad core should be able to turn some great results but if you are just running the GUI client you will only be utilizing one of the cores. You either need to run the SMP client or run 3 more copies of the console client. The SMP client would be the best but it's still in beta and one annoying thing about it is that it doesn't checkpoint. So if you reboot or shutdown your computer frequently you will end up losing a lot of work units.

The SMP client would be the best but it's still in beta and one annoying thing about it is that it doesn't checkpoint. So if you reboot or shutdown your computer frequently you will end up losing a lot of work units.

Just a fyi for anyone running the Windows SMP client (If you don't know what that is you aren't running it :D ) the previous beta version expired on 9/30 and you have to download the latest beta version and upgrade to keep it running. Mine stopped last night and I had to upgrade.

You're quite welcome. I had 2 machines just sitting around and figured this would be something good to use them for. What gets me is the slow 1.6ghz AMD machine can finish a WU in 3 days while the faster 2.5Ghz Celeron takes 5 or more days per WU. I knew I liked AMD for a reason ;)
Any way to speed these WUs up ?

I wish I could do larger work units, but both of the big computers I was running it on are really tasked right now with Solidworks and other graphics intensive stuff... The receptionist computer (vacant these days) is chugging away on nothing but FAH essentially and is accomplishing the lions share of the WU's from my end.
My computer is only really working on it from 10 or so at night to 8 in the morning during my off time.
I have loosely considered leaving work earlier and coming in later so that I can contribute more towards our team.

With the number of people on ***boat, we could own some realestate toward the top of the list. As more members come online, we will continue to climb.
To be honest, I've considered upgrading one of my boxes that is currently a single CPU system. It's grossly overpowered for anything I do with it, other than folding, so it doesn't need more resource but it would be cool to rattle off units a little faster.
Nokomis, I run v6.00b1 on one of my dual core systems and it runs quite well. I don't know how it compares to the older versions in terms of speed but it's been perfectly stable here.

`
v6.00b1 is stable here on the 1.6ghz AMD Athalon, 333 FSB and 512 ram.
3 day per. WU consistently.
I'm running the older version 5.03 in the 2.5ghz Celeron 256Mb 2700 ram taking 5~6 days per WU.
even though it's low priority I still freak out when I see 100% CPU usage while it's running.

Those net burst based Celerons were the crappiest crap put out in the last five years. I've got a 2.8Gig Cel in a laptop that the fan runs full out and you can still cook a cocktail weeny or two on...didn't have the heart to put folding on that one since just running a torrent client put the usage over 50%.

My two dual quad core servers went into production and keeping the process running has become difficult. :(
It currently runs as a scheduled task at startup since running as a service isn't supported yet. Even when running as a seperate account anytime I log out as any user it stops the process.
I'll run it manually for now. Maybe I'll run it as a service anyway and see if it runs after a logout.
Forensic
I'm running the SMP client as a service on both my XP and Vista machines. Here's the process that I've followed and it seems to work
1.) Make sure you do the initial install while logged onto an account with admin priveleges and choose to install it as a service
2.) Run it at least once from that same ID in a command window until it initializes and the 4 FAH cores start using CPU.
3.) Go to properties of the FAH service in the services control panel and in the Logon tab change it from Local account to this account and put in the ID and PW of the admin account.
4.) Reboot your computer and it should now be running as a service.
I've found that on my wife and kids computers I can even set it up so they logon to an ID with no pw and it still works fine as long as I have another admin ID on that computer with a pw that I did the initial install under and have the service running under.
One thing I've noticed though is that if I reboot the computer it won't consistently restart from a checkpoint unless I manually stop the service first.
There are also some FAH monitors that can monitor remote machines for you, I haven't tried them but have been meaning to. Here's a link a bunch of resources for FAH, it looks like some people have setup up their very own FAH farms:

Well it went like this. I read that the PS3 could really crank out the WUs. That being noted (and me being cheap) I pulled out the old Atari system, fired up the prom-chip burner then cracked open an old atari cartridge. With a bout of intense code writing and a little fusion of Folding@home v.05.000a1, some superglue and a few trips to radio shack the "system" was up and running. The VHf signal is fed into the garage TV and out to my Highly prized quadraphonic sound system ( I think this is really making it "spin the yarn") which is of course plugged into the wall receptical. This in turn sends the signal to my powerline USB adapter. It features a 14 Mbps transfer rate and 56-bit DES encryption, so my nosy neighbors can't intercept our WUs. My system further connects to my Commodore 64 so I can keep a tight tally on the points. Look out Hooli.. I'm shooting for ya buddy, and Hanson is on my radar. On a side note.. Does anyone remember what toggle on the Atari made it go into turbo mode when flickered a few times? I really want to crank this thing up to max boost.

Sorry to hear about your aunt Jetaholic, but welcome aboard the folding crew here.
The missing wu's might have something to do with my wireless router and/or wireless adapters in the machines. Im gonna look into it. The wired ones seem to be more reliable.
As far as the increase in my increased output, I tasked more machines to smp clients that were running the graphical one. Even some two-core Pent D920's are able to finish the smp in the timeframe allowed.
