Thought you guys want this info about proper trailer hitch for your trucks. I hardly ever see a weight distributing hitch being used on the california custom boat scene [ too ugly :rollside: ] .Should take a poll how many using the weight distributing hitch over 5000 lbs .Note ; Escalade and Denali is not even mentioned in this GM line up  ;)

I use a weight-distributing hitch (Reese Titan).
Doesn't the stock hitch require a WD hitch depending on the tongue weight, not the total weight?

HH , you prolly have a class V receiver with 14000 max capacity . When you use a weight carrying set up , the draw bar has to have the tongue and trailer capacities stamped on . My GC is a 1/2 T truck with factory class IV tow package ,according to the registration paper .I use a draw bar with a max 700 lbs tongue cap and 10000 lbs trailer capacity. The 98 GC is rated to tow 6700 lbs with the weight distributing hitch and only 5000 with the weight carrying one. Your Cig must weigh like 8000 + trailer ,huh ? BTW I'm shopping for a truck soon ,cause my 24' boat/trailer weighs in at 8.383 lbs at the scale :220v: .

I think you are correct- that stock V-5 hitch that comes on the truck (with a 2" reciever) holds the rating back.
I had a hard time finding a 2" WD reciever rated for 1,400lbs tongue weight, so I upgraded to a class 5. The Titan is rated for 14,000lbs/1,400lbs tongue weight. The shank is rated for 1,700 lbs tongue weight.
My boat is around 12,000lbs on the trailer (with no gas in it), with around 1,400lbs tongue weight, so I am using every bit of the truck's tow rating, but have a little room on the hitch. I transfer a few hundred pounds of that to the front wheels with the WD setup. Even without the transfer, I'd still be OK on the rear tire's ratings...but why risk it?

Maybe I should put helium in the trailer tires...that could help while towing.
