Me and a couple of buddies went to Catalina for the race and we rented one of those outboard boats to go watch the turn. Well we got a little more action then planned. From what I heard is the turn boat was near the casino and it was supposed to be towards the condos north of the casino. Well as always, it was foggy and the turn boat had a white balloon in the air so it was hard to see against the fog. Haig and Proctor came in north of the turn boat and almost overshot the turn but saw it at the last minute and made a decent turn. But for a many boats after that, they overshot the turn and after they finally saw the turn boat they had to drive right through the spectators boats to complete the turn. we were in that little 15 foot outboard and had boats blazing as close as 10 feet from our boat. We watched as two boats almost hit together just feet from us. It was crazy. you could talk to the skier as he went by. we got a couple pictures and I'll have my buddy post them later. The best ski race Ive ever watched.

I couldn't believe it when Randy Davis towing Todd Haig cut through the spectator boats!!! What a move - that put them squarely ahead of Warpath and Peter Proctor....

Hoggins was coming right at us and turned at the last second, he missed us by about 10-15 feet at the absolute most.

His white wash, all i could pop off by braile bracing myself for the wake, if i had of gotten the skier it would have been a great shot.

The racers missed the turn and came through the middle of the spectators trying to get back on course, it was no stunt on our part.

On the jumbotron, it looked like the spectator boats were too close. I would have thought they would have the spectators further away...but it is hard to tell when the shot was a very small part and did not show where the entry into the turn was....it did look like they only needed to make about a 90 degree turn after passing the turn boat.
If any of you were hanging around, I was there with my Whipple blower sitting on a table on the boardwalk.

You can see the turn boat behind us in this picture, we were a good 300-500 feet from it, there was multiple patrol boats making sure that no one got too close. what happened was the whole fleet of racers came in about half a mile too far north, and by the time the guy on the turn boat finally shot a flair he was at the racers 9 o'clock so i would have been very difficult for them to see. when they finally did figure out where the turn boat was they were now between the majority of specators and the shore, way overshooting the turn. There was a 200 foot gap in the crowd of dingy's and other boats which they saw and shot for, coming right through the crowd. We were the boat right at the edge of the gap. The bow of our rental boat in the picture is pointed directly at the turn boat, our stern is pointed directly back to shore, the racers came in from Long Beach just about between Me and Howardflat's heads in the picture, were off course to the north (left side of picture) used the spectators as their turn bouy and came off our port side from the stern heading back to toward the turn boat, so this gives you an idea of how far they got off course.

yea and you can see in that picture how good you can see the balloon in the air.

Have to agree with you about the turn. I remember Todd Haig's crew making about a 30 degree left through the spectators, then about a 60 turn after the boat with the baloon.....
BTW nice blower....If there had been two,,,,,

Actually the turn boat was not exactly where it was suppose to be as per drivers meeting and wasn't very visible against the clouds. GPS don't lie. Everyone had to scramble some to find it. A big orange or yellow balloon would have probably helped. I know we didn't see it until we'd almost past it and had to come back to it down the island a little.

I was pulling a novice skier so by the time we got to the turn boat the spectator boats had been cleared out - It wasn't too easy to find the turn boat - If the balloon was a bright color instead of white that would have helped.
