View Full Version : Really high quality umbrella...

I am looking to add an umbrella option to the boat, and I need a source of some really high quality ones that can be custom made. Probably a rip-stop fabric in a spinnaker weight with quality hardware. I have looked at the home depot/outdoor style and don't like it.
I really don't want to build my own, but it is looking like it might be the most realistic.
What would be perfect is fiberglass shock poles like in tents, aluminum or carbon fiber posts and billet fixtures.
Anyone know of anything?

Before doing an umbrellas, I would add an anti-lightning device. :D
not getting wet is nice, but not getting shocked to death is better.

We just use your boat. Or a wakeboard boat...

I think the umbrella would take away alot of the tridents cool factor.

I think it would be totally fly if it was in a collapsable cocktail table in the front of the boat.
I think bimini tops are the ugliest, stupidest designs ever for providing shade with. I can't believe we haven't figured out something better by now...
It would be square for one... and built with awesome materials. I agree that it isn't as cool as nothing up... but that isn't an option for most folks.
There has to be something better than a bimini...

I agree...
I don't like the bimini on the boat and a counter sunk billet table/umbrella holder in the front area would be cool. I know you said you could do it when we were looking at the boat.

Unfortunately, they are garbage. I bought one and gave it away the first weekend.
I need self supporting, lightweight, durable, trick and good looking.

That is the idea... Except I want it to really work well in high winds without going nuts. I am thinking about how golf umbrellas have the anti-wind devices around the skirt to keep them from inverting. Something like that.

Seriously - how about rigging something that folds up, but works kinda like this?

hmmmm...
I think it would have to be heavy/ substancial enough to look good.
What about building the table where the top has a screw on twist lock collar. Insert pole and twist the collar so it keeps the umbrella from flying away. Now you just need to wrry about the table staying place in heavy wind. Billet holder where you lower in the table and twist it so it won't come out.
Cool idea.
Maybe you can meke the umbrella with the same led lights so it will enhance the night time light show?  :D

I think Bimini's are cool. Would you atleast offer it if someone wanted one?? The umbrella creates an obstacle in the boat and you probably couldn't drive with it at speed like you can with a bimini. With a bimini you would just want to be able to put it away if not needed, where would it go and not be in the way?

contrarily
I think the evolution of shade (no pun intended) has the boat umbrella first and the bimini second :D :D

a nice stainless bitchin bimini is pretty hard to beat, since you can leave it up while you are running. that aint gonna happen with any kind of umbrella, not saying that an umbrella wouldnt cool. I would make a custom one with a stainless post and billet hardware, just a beefed up version of a normal collapsing one, that was fully collaspable and easily stowable, and heavy duty, with sunbrella fabric, or maybe that fabric they use on biminis that is mesh-like.
I guess it'd be kinda hard to put a bimini on the evolution with the side swimstep, since when you put it down it would be right in the way, we built the biminis in our 32' spectras to fold down under the engine hatch, leaving just the bars exposed from behind the drivers and passenger seats over the rear arm-rest and into the hatch, with nice upholstered covers over the arms when collapsed

I dunno Wes. I don't know how you could make an umbrella look cool. would be interested to see. I think it would mess up the cool lines you already have going. I'd think it would go along the lines of installing a stripper pole in the front of your boat.
Being a fair skinned person, I like bimini's. Never run with ours up though at any speed. I'd hate for something to break and it to fly off.

The boat is available with a high quality bimini. We use stainless struts to hold it up when stowed. No question that they work, but they are ugly, heavy and don't work that well.
In any case, I have a client that wants an umbrella that he can stow up front to go into a table we have designed. The table is really cool, and is collapseable etc... lots of neat billet parts on it as well.
Before I go designing and building a $1500 umbrella, I was just wondering if anyone out there has seen really good ones that will do the trick.
I am not worried about securing the umbrella, or making the mount take wind... I just want to keep it from inverting and turning into a dumb looking bucket in heavy winds.
You would never drive with the umbrella up. Probably not the table either for that matter.
