Nice ride Kat, but I don't think that is a classic...
I think the old inline 6 would be more of a classic... I remember the bumble bee sound, at the high revs, man I miss those motors!!!!!

***boatCharles I would say is more vintage outboards. I was looking for more of the OG Baker, Stoker, Eliminator, Nordic bubble decks from the 70's and 80's.

That pic is from OP63 last year as we were towin' 77Charger's 1977 Charger to the sandbar. 90HP doesn't give ya much top end but she's a thrill a minute in the rough stuff! Can you say air-time? I have an 86 19ft Eliminator sprint with an Erude 150xp V6. It's yellow, orange, and candy apple red (like so many Eliminators of it's era) with a little burgandy and black striping as well. When I figure out how to post pics I'll post some. It gets a lot of looks and nice comments every time I take it out.
A couple of weeks ago I went out all day and ran it around in some really crappy and rough water at castiac. It used 8 gal of gas for the day.

I've got an 82, 18 Foot Charger DL, its powered by a 1980 200HP Merc. The motor was bought brand new and is run hard every season and still runs great. Everytime I talk to my buddies on the lake at the start of the boating season, they always ask me if its still the original motor, or If I rebuilt it over the winter, but I give em the same answer every year. "It may be old, but it still runs like new"

I have gotten at least 5 mpg out of mine. That was running a 29" SRX, a 1.86:1 ratio, and getting the boat to fly right around 65 mph.
I also can drain my tanks (22 gal total) in less than an hour if I want!
Too bad I am fixing to retire it. It is just too old and too thin. I keep on breaking it. So.....I am putting it out to pasture (in the barn). :( I guess it might make a good plug... eek!

2 strokes just seem more money to overhaul.
The newer fuel inject Merc 2 strokes get good MPG, but have funny power characteristics.
Somedays plenty of power,, somedays not.
It's rumored the problem is in the emission controls.
Hell, damfino.
Look closely at Merc 2 and four stroke motors,, and Yamaha outboard motors. Very similar.

Not sure if this is old enough to be classic because it is a 1985. After many years of Jets, V-drives, and boring tournament inboards thought I'd play with a Outboard for awhile. Finally a boat that I can run 6000rpm and not feel like I am hurting it to bad. Oops, now I probably jinxed myself and it will blow up next week! Oh well, I'll have fun doing it! Its a 18ft Lavey Craft with 200 Merc on a setback.

Absolutly! I want to repaint that motor. The previous owner painted it white and put on the stickers. I'm not sure wheather I want to try to restore it to it's original charcoal gray or paint it yellow with orange and candy apple red flames.
It cost me $2,200 to get the motor running right, so the only cosmetic work I have done is the color sanding and polishing I have done myself and a little minor upolstry repair. You can't see the upolstry, but the seats are white with stripes that match the gelcoat and they are in great shape.

HavasuDreamin'
07-24-2003, 01:49 PM
What was wrong with the motor??

eliminatedsprinter
07-24-2003, 02:13 PM
Well, $1300 of it went into a "tune up", water pump impeller, re-sealing the lower unit, a new wiring harness for the trailer, and a trailering bracket.
The other $1000 went into new coils, a solinoid, replacing some wireing and a new starboard side power pack.
I got a very good price on the boat, so I expected to have to put some money into it. However, if my mechanic would have spotted my probs from the get go I would have considered upgrading to a used 200. As it is approaching that kind of money. Right now it runs in the mid 50s with just me aboard and it has a somewhat dinged up aluminum 14 1/2 X 21 prop. I'm hoping to find a good stainless that will get me into the low 60s and still keep my hole shot. Any ideas? Perhaps a 14 1/2 x 23 chopper. The motor turns what I have around 5400 rpm. It gets there real quick and just levels out. My mechanic says I shouldn't run my motor to any higher RPM than that anyways.

In my opinion, the cost to repair the old outboards easily exceed the value of the boat so a lot of them were junked. Here is a shot of our '73 Tahiti Tiger outboard. We are in the process of returning it to its original configuration. Got rid of funky wiring and switches. Also previous owner decided to install taller seat pedestal so they could fit speakers below that are now gone http://www.***boat.com/image_center/data/520/880Mvc-002f-med.jpg . I did go through the inline Merc and completely replace seat wood and vinyl. Need to redo gel coat and carpet. Original colors area metal flake magenta and silver. Someone had decided to paint the deck with a burgundy enamel that is now peeling off in places.

As for the color sanding, I just took fine grit sandpaper (400-1500) and CAREFULLY wet sanded off the old pitted or faded gelcoat. Then polished it back up to as wet a shine as I could. There are a few spots where the gel coat is chiped, dinged, and in one spot worn through. Those spots will probably require a pro to touch up, but for the most part it helped a lot and I'm happy with how it looks.
I don't know if your ultra is a classic, but I can tell you it looks fantastic. :D

So that process works for taking out minor scratches and slight chalking?

eliminatedsprinter
07-30-2003, 04:05 PM
It helped for me. Mine had a clear coat that had a lot of discoleration and pitting. But it esp helps get rid of chalking and fading etc..Use as fine a paper as will do the job, keep it wet, and do it carefully by hand, so you don't go too deep. Then polish real well.
From the pictures, your boat's colors look pretty good already.
If you are wondering what to do to your boat's gel coat. There are many here who can help you. In particular there is a pro on the boards named "Havasu Barney". From what I've seen on these boards, I'd say he has probably forgot more about glass work than I'll ever know....

I have seen Barney's work on the board too. Truly impressive. For the most part, the gel is in great shape. There are a couple spots with some light chalking and minor scratches. I am a perfectionist, so I was thinking of getting them out. Probably should just leave well enough alone!
:D
Anyway, thanks for the info and compliments!

eliminatedsprinter
07-31-2003, 02:33 PM
You might try polishing the chalking. If that dosn't work then rubbing compound and then wet sanding if RC dosn't work.
Of course, it's your call, since you are the one who can see it.

Much faster out of the whole and more than 5 mph more on the top end. I was unable to air it out (the conditions were too rough) to see it's new top end, but in short sprints it went more than 5 mph faster than it ever did before, plus it now cruises (at approx 2/3 throttle) at what was it's previous top speed . :D
