They have a 225 outboard with VTEC and digital fuel injection that looks like a pretty good setup, but I never see them on performance boats !! Whats the deal ?

for a light boat the 4 strokes are too heavy (500+lbs) vs 375 for my merc 2.5 efi 260.plus the rev range is limited vs merc 2.5.i think a 4 stroke could be built to run like a merc 2.5 but it would have to have a large markit demand.i bought a 1000cc yamaha street bike that dynoed at 130hp at rear wheel.i am sure yamaha could build a 10,000rpm 4 stroke that is light enough to replace a merc-like a v8 version of the motor on my street bike with efi.no more oil burning and loading up cruising the channel at havasu.if peak performance (top speed) wasnt critcal i would run a honda.

Yea, add camshafts, followers, chains, chain guides, gears, oil pumps, valves and all their components......LOL 10,000 rpm...How about 235hp at just 2.6L? Stock! My OMC never loads up...and it is carburated... :)
4 strokes suck! eek!

i bought a 1000cc yamaha street bike that dynoed at 130hp at rear wheel.i am sure yamaha could build a 10,000rpm 4 stroke that is light enough I think the problem with that is that unless your boat weighs 350lbs, there won't be enough torque at 2500 rpm to plane the boat. Or if you prop it down you'll run out of rpm's. Like your motorcycle- a gearbox would be needed.
BTW- has anyone weighed a 260?
Merc lists a 260 at 375 lbs but a 280 at 412lbs. Does an alternater and bracket really weigh 37 lbs?

on my luch break now but i was playing with a new 225 yamaha 4 stroke earlier at work and when you take the oil fill cap off it you turn the motor over just right you can see ford and the logo stamped into the cam. i thought it was kinda interesting

yamaha and ford have some similar engine pieces ever since they went in on that Taurus SHO motor they developed. Someone should do a 4 stroke super boat, see what they are capable of.

yamaha wasnt happy because ford never bought as many motors as they said they would.i work as a tech at a ford dealer.the motor is a taurus sho was good-the rest of the car was crap.as far as a high perf outboard yamaha could make a 4 stroke run like a merc 280 2 stroke.but they wont until they are certain they will sell enough motors to recover cost of research and development

So, what you're sayin is Yamaha will build some good engines (like Merc)once they collect enough money from their crap engines?
