I am tired of listening to the rattling flappers in my exhaust tips and have been wanting to upgrade to a muffler and silent flapper set up. What's the best way to go?

What is rattling? I have a 496 Mag in my boat and mine doesn't make a rattling noise.

After a few years, they start to rattle. Not only where the rubber wears on the flap itself, but at the hinge-pins on the sides.
I knocked mine out with a chisel and kept the external rubber flaps.
I have a brand new set of Gibson clamp-ons in a box in the engine compartment. Never put them on. I just have them in case I need them.

I got a set of the Gibson. They are nice. Quiet on idle and good sound on plane.

I installed the small insert baffels in the exaust hose and remover the flappers, as the baffels (muffler) will provide the same protection from water intrusion. I still use the rubber flaper over the exhaust. Problem now is I can hear my wife.........:)

I was just back from the Genesis Regatta and the guy from Zoomers was there with his 'patented' exhaust system. He mentioned that they are the approved by Mercruiser and are patented to guarentee an add in horsepower. May be a solid option to take a look at.

Well hopefully they have done some redesigning on these because I put a set on my other 27 Shadow I had last year with a 525 and it killed my performance. Went right back to Savage the same day I had them installed and had them taken off. The only thing they were good for was passing the Marina test and getting my AZ's registered. I lost an easy 5-7 mph and the motor sounded all choked up.

This is also a pretty powerful claim. What happens if this does not happen do you get your money back?

I would be scared to run mufflers with a big blower set up. Probably
be killing valves for sure.

Hey Bad Axe you dont need any flappers the water line and the exhaust is high enough you dont have to worry about it.

My exhaust tips are below the swim step and with the boat at rest are well below the water line.

Mine also, I have the same boat as you. I actually had to pull the exhaust while the boat was in the water and the riser on the exhaust is high enough you dont have to worry about the water flowing back into the motor. Oh wait i have after market exhaust. WIch do you have.

Any surge, boat wake, etc. and the water will go over the elbow....

So do you think a set of muffler tips with external flappers will do the job?

Thanks for the help. Anybody else? BA we have the Gibson bullets with 496HO. They are real quite at idle and have a good deep sound at speed. No noticable loss of power.
If im not mistaken, Gibson claims no power loss up to like 500 or 600HP? Should be no loss on the 496HO. Gibsons would get my vote! We will be up next weekend. I will keep an eye out for you. Can check em out in person!

Why cant you just run the external flappers with no mufflers? That would keep any unwanted water going back up and at speed the rubber flapper's would pretty much stay open.

My tips have the angled cut.

I have the Zoomers on my boat with twin Raylar 600's, don't think I lost much if anything on performance and they sound great and work for the marina. Mine ARE NOT the clamp on's.

My tips have the angled cut.
Change the tips to the straight cut and put the flappers on. Or just cut the existing tips to a straight cut.

I just starting offering the Zoomers exhaust mufflers and have been very impressed so far. Here is a set that we just put on a sleek craft...the owner claims no loss of performance and a definate decibel reduction.

I have a used set of these if you want. They are thru transom not clamp on.
IMCO Exhaust Mufflers
True performance stainless steel mufflers that silences motors up to 600 horsepower.
MEGA-704 4" flange mount dual stage mufflers 877.00 Per Pair
http://www.imcomarine.com/pages/exhuast.html
Need to be polished but work great. really quite and have internal rubber flaps. Had them on my bros Hallett. when the boat sat dead in the water 1/3 of the tips were below the water line. never had a problem (REVERSION).
p/m me if you want them.

I think good mufflers like Gibson, Zoomers, etc in bolt on are good for reducing noise and the flappers can be rattle so bad on some 496's that they set off the knock sensors on the motor. As for Zoomers or any marine muffler adding power to a 496 motor, my expierence tells me thats way beyond a stretch! There are no mufflers that increase power on high performance boats and a propshaft dyno test will prove that very quickly. The loss of power in the better muffler sets is negligable but there is some. We've done some propshaft and in water testing on our Laveycraft race boat with its GGB stainless mufflers and there is a slight drop in performance but versus a "no can launch" or tickets its not a factor. The water in the exhaust system alone scrubs off about 20 or so HP versus running a dry exhaust!:D

Ray @ Raylar
