Does anyone have an outside BBQ with granite counter tops?
I want to use granite, but I'm not sure if it will be too hot.

It'll get warm like any other stone. I used a lite grey color and its fine but still gets hot if in direct sunlight.

There are ALOT of different colors of granite. I would go with a lighter color if it's going to get alot of direct sunlight.

Silestone is also a good option. Lots of light colors available and its non-porous. With Granite, you will need to seal it at least twice a year. And most light colored granite scratches easier than the darker colors

Does the Silestone scratch easy?

That shouldn't be a problem after you get finished building mine. :D

Not easily. Its some pretty tough stuff. If I remember correctly, it contains over 95% quartz.

Slate is choice #2. I really want something very durable that I can get in one piece (no grout).
Nice setup!

Just stay away from dark granite. My installer had a dark color in direct sunlight crack right down the middle for one of his customers!
My bro in law has granite under shade in Havi and has had no problems

Go with granite. My last 2 had granite tops and it worked out great. A little hot in the sun but looks good. Any natural stone you install will have to be sealed. A little tip use 1 1/4" instead of 3/4" and laminating the edge. The edge will fall off after a while. Just fabricate a single edge out of the 1 1/4", a little bit more but worth it.

Nice if you have a good contractor but more maintenance then Silestone.

Granite works fine for me. It gets a little hot in the direct sun.

I have concrete countertops. Stained and sealed. Works great.

I think you should get a big slab of plastic cutting board material...you can prep right there.
Seriously though, any material is going to get hot in the sun, you'll be fine with granite or cement.

My buddy has a concrete counter top stained and sealed also. Thing is bitchen looking. Better then anything I've seen on a BBQ Island.

I have tried both granite and tile and they just have not worked very well. The glue for the granite, and the grout on the tile just does not hold up outside. I recently used concrete and sealed it. I started to see concrete being used for kitchen counters. These concrete guys can do wonders with counter tops. The top is very smooth and strong. Nothing can hurt it.
You might want to investigate this...
