A friend of mine wants to put thru-transom exhaust on his boat, but he says he doesn't have enough room in the engine compartment for a rear exit. He asked me if anyone has ever run the exhaust out the side of the hull on a small boat.
I wouldn't see a problem, other than the usuall with thru-transom.
Has anyone done this?
Thanks

OK, so it's a bad idea.
Any reasons, this guy seems pretty serious about it.
Thanks

If I remember right last year at the LA boat show I walked by the Crownline booth and they had boats on display that had the exhausts on the side of the hull.

I would talk with Corsa, they will tell you the best route to take. I had a Celebrity that I wanted thru hull on. They sent me a print telling me where to cut the holes and what all I needed.
my 2 cents,

biggest problem is that they sound like a poorly running 4 cylinder because you only hear half the engine. Sounds much better if you put a crossover on.

I see no problems at all other than thickness of hull for penetration. transom is a lot thicker therefore stronger to hold weight and resist vibration. I`d glass some 3/4 in just to make sure. Other than that all the Coast Guard and Navy boats I`ve done (aluminum hull) are either out the side or the bottom. You would also run into a cleaning issue with exhaust deposits. Very unsightly.

The guys at Corsa are Great,, I was having a problem with my Cobalt just after getting my thru hull put in and I called them just to inquire whether having their exhaust would mess with the fuel mapping enough to need a new ECM... They said they would have someone call me and next thing you know I was speaking to one of the owners. Really nice nice people. Very help full as it turns out it was a bad ECM nothing to do with the exhaust just as the owner stated. I had the option to go with side exhaust but went through the back instead. The sides look really trick on the crown lines but were a lot more expensive for my 206 and the dealer recomended mufflers with that set up.
