Directv will be adding 75 new HD channels in September, you will need to upgrade your 3 LNB dish to a 5 LND dish to receive the new HD channels.
The appointments are already 2 weeks out.

Do we have to pay for that upgrade??? I'm not sure which one I have, its really wide though. They told me I wouldn't have to change it when I got it about 4 months ago........

If you got it 4 months ago, then I am pretty sure the installed the 5 LNB dish. And I think depending on how old the HD box/receiver, you might need that changed as well.

I was told I was getting a 5 lnb dish when I called, but when the lowest bidder contractor shows up, they try to change things up. I found out that they installed a 3 lnb dish.....Be careful...

When I was a kid, we had a toaster that could pick up a high frequency AM radio station if you aligned it a certain way.

wonder if its on e-bay yet. Scored a 4 pack of 3LNB dishes last year for 75 bucks. sold 3 and made 75 bucks, plus hooked the 5th wheel up with local channels out of state. The clock is one hour off though.
Yeah I know, its free at home but this way I can take the shit with me and have extra set ups.

If you have the Tivo HD box (HR10-250) you will need to upgrade to the New HD Box (HR-20) to get the new channels also. The Tivo (HR 10-250) will not receive the new mpeg 4 programming.
Driverno8 you will need to upgrade.....:( :( :( :(

So what do I need now?????????????? I got mine set up about 2 years ago when we moved in to the new house. So my boxes probably need updating right? Now, my big screen in the fam room is an HD ready unit. So I need to go get a tuner right? The others I could could care less about. Older TVs.

DirecTV contacted me months ago and scheduled the swap of my 3 LNB to the 5 LNB dish at both houses. They also mailed me a new H20 (from memory I think that is the model number) HD receiver for each one I already had and didn't even want the old ones back. Now I have 6 hi-def receivers - pretty cool.

that sounds about right; I actually had the biz card from the technician that came out and installed my dish. He couldn't remember which dish he installed, so told me about the 499 channel tester. I guess I sounded pretty much like a tool when I asked if he remembered what dish he put up there back in Feb.  :hammer2:

I have the enclosed auto tracking Wineguard dish on the RV.
Can it be up-graded? Or does it even need to be?
And, can one get a non-dirrct reciever anymore?
We love the Sony way over the Direct TV reciever.
The menu is better and station holding abilities are streets ahead of the direct box.

Yes and no.
I've been using the HDTivo for several years, and the HR20 for almost a year and at first, there was NO comparison between the two. Those of you who are just getting the HR20, consider yourselves lucky. We have had over 12 software updates since I first got the non-Tivo DVR (HR20) and it is WAY WAY better than at first.
If you're a TiVo lover, you will sorely miss the 30-sec skip (the HR20 uses a ff algorithm that takes about 3 seconds instead of TiVo's instant skip), the skip-to-tick (painful to use on the new HR20), the ability to organize alphabetically, while having the folders list in recording order, unlimited Season Passes (50 is the limit on the HR20), DUAL LIVE BUFFERS (probably the most requested feature to date) and a snappy OS.
The new(ish) HR20 is leaps and bounds better than a year ago, but for those of us who have been using a TiVo OS will have quite a learning curve.
On the bright side, the HR20 hasn't missed a recording in several months. At first, it was about 80/20 with 20% of recordings missed or gray-screen, but that seems to be fixed.
