I am toying with the idea of building a sleeper car and was wondering what you guys thought about makes and models. I have always wanted to build up a BMW 2002. Very unassuming.

LOL, when I was looking around for an old beater for a daily driver, I ran across an early 80's Ford Granada with a 302 and a 3 speed stick on the floor, from the factory. It was pretty funny, f*cking with people at the lights. :D

My old sleeper. Bought it from my uncle in Oklahoma for $800 and drove it home. Ran low 11's at Palmdale. Had a 350 bored 0.060 over with 11.5:1 compression, steel crank, camel back heads, Edelbrock Torker manifold and a Holley 750 on it. Engine was out of his old Saugus Sportsman car.

Easy, 1970-71 Old 455 station wagon. My buddies parents had one we used to steal as teenagers. We called it the "Moto-missle"
Bast*rd had to be 30' long and was scary fast. Could power brake it and just melt the tires. Tommy

My crazy uncle flipped the exhaust manifolds over. Basically, the drivers side is flipped and on the passenger side and the passenger side is flipped and on the drivers side. I wrapped the exhaust in an attempt to keep the heat down in the engine compartment. Couldnt find any headers for it and they wanted more money to make custom ones than what I paid for the car.
The front suspension was an old Corvair because the stock Opel suspension couldnt take the extra weight of the engine.
Definitely was a sleeper. Was nice and quiet with the single exhaust.

I built an '83 Luv truck for my Dad back in '86. Strong 350, turbo 350 trans., narrowed 28 spline 9" rear with the axles drilled for stock Isuzu wheels. Currey Int. had the housing and axles IN STOCK! That thing was easily the most wicked daily driver ever.
I used early 60's corvette "center dump" ex. manifolds. They were a bolt in. Had a good ex. shop finish out the system with 2" pipe and some sort of turbo-mufflers. Only thing was I had to cut the Accessory boss off the manifold.

It's a 1967 Opel Kadette and people did laugh. Would get some odd looks while was sitting at the light and start power braking it. The car would smoke the tires for blocks.
When was driving home from Meeker, Oklahoma on the 40 would have people pull up next to me and laugh. Then would nail the gas pedal and smoke the tires on the freeway passing them you should have seen their mouths drop.
Got decent mileage driving home because it had some 2.70 gears in it. I put 3.55's in it which woke it up with those small tires.
I had the car for a few years and then sold for $3K. Definitely made some money on the car.

I'd recommend my daily driver. Chrysler 300c SRT8. Stock 12.9 quarter mile 4.3 second 0-60 top speed of about 175 insane braking and handling is unbelievable. My wife took it to work the other day and came back all happy because some guy in a Porsche tried to race her and she smoked him. She said at the next light the guy wouldn't even pull up next to her. He just stayed back a car length then made the next turn :D

You could consider the Caprice/Impala clone.
Get a 90s Impala, or get the Caprice, put a 350 hp crate motor in, get some better wheels, maybe some paint. Fairly inexpensive, the sbc already fits.

Saw a mid 90's imp at the Super Chevy show last year. I have no idea what it had under the hood but it had remote cut-outs so you could stand right next to it and talk and it just sounded like a quiet turbo muffler. But then he would flip the switch in the box do the sickest burnout and run in the mid 9's. Oh and on the return lane he'd switch back to quiet exhaust and pick up his 2 buddies in the back seat with a FULL CAGE!
I have seen that car. pretty sure its a big cube LT1 car with twins making alot of boost. I don't know if I saw him run mid 9's back in 01 but he did run in the 10's at over 130 with car seats in the back:D

One of the coolest sleepers I ever saw was about a 91? Buick Roadmaster wagon (complete with woodgrain on the sides). It was in hot rod mag years ago. Had a LT1 based motor (he ordered it with the LT1 from the factory) .
I always liked the Monties but not the SS, use a LT or a LS.
I have heard of a few Astro vans around with a small block, Thought about that one but they are heavy as snot!.

My 91 Mustang coupe (my 5th one) Not really a sleeper with these wheels on it, but with a set of 15inch Steelies and 600+ hp it is definitely a sleeper. I had a buddy that had a coupe just like mine with black 15" Welds, primer everywhere and was running 9.90s. He drove the fricken thing to work all the time too.

On average they seem to go mid to low 13's at 105-108. The standard 5.7 hemi cars are boring but that 6.1 is a burnout machine with TC off:D:devil:

I love these cars. You can buy a bolt in 460 swap kit (w/ headers) and get that thing up to speed but around here you can't pass smog. 14.9 is almost embarrasing.
I agree about the time. This car with a 460 would be a lot of fun. What is the smog cut off these days.

My better half likes to roll around in the GTO. she gets way more races than I do:(:)
She came home one day and said she beat a turboed GTO to 100 pretty bad because he couldn't hook. That is hilarious. I can see my wife rubbing it in like that too. Dam woman, they are all smart asses. Why is it that I very rarely have anyone try to race me on the street yet it seems like a regular occurence for the wife and she doesn't even hardly drive the car. Says it scares her yet she's willing to race anyone that looks at her cross-eyed. Maybe if I wear a blonde wig and put a couple balloons in my shirt I can get more takers.

Back in the day we used to cruise around on friday/saturday nights looking for action. Now I drive to work (in traffic) and drive home.
I did get some high speed runs with a newer 645ci and M3 on the way to havasu 2 weeks ago. M3 ran up on me at about 100 while I was cruising 85. took me until 130 to pull on him. Autos suck from high speed rolls:mad: :)

That's the SRT sweet spot right there. 3rd gear about 90-135ish is fricken insane. You punch it at 90 and it's all about...hold onto your butt. Then it gets fun again about 150 on up

My car is good at 65. It drops to 2nd and away we go. At 80 it bogs 3rd gear and starts to pull hard at 100. Stupid 4 speeds;)
I got walked by a guy in a modded evo from 85 a couple weeks back. he would leave when I got to his bumper and I would start to pull back the 3 cars around 100.
I would have got him from 60:devil:

It is BADASS. It's blown, with nitrous v6. But the outside of it looks totally stock, except for some alloy wheels, nothing racey looking. He told me it's hilarious pulling up to Corvettes and Camaros and whooping them on the street!
The car ran 203mph on the salt flats, which is Extremely impressive. Just did it to screw with people I guess. Here's a pic of what it looks like other than it's Silver.

Good luck on finding a running Cyclone, Typhoon.
I worked at a GMC dealership in the 90's, And at one time we had 4 of them all with bottom end problems. One of them only had 12,000 miles.
A buddy of mine found a 81 Chevy Malibu wagon with a 305 and a factory 3 speed once. That car got a 468 and a 4 speed, tinted windows and black paint. looked great but the inside was bare. Made alot of money in that car.

Good Old Datsun 510's We used to race them back in the early 80's to late 80's. I had 13 of them..1 even with a 350LT1 turbo 400 and 280zx rear end, and it looked stock except for the dual exhaust and lovered hood for cooling.
Ran low 13's with stock street tires, never got to try it with slicks..we were estimated high mid 12's with good hookup....others were with tilton race turbo motors, 2.2 napZ cross flow head motors and a bunch with just 1600, 1800 and 2000 motors..dual webs, turbos, nitros. Blow away most porsches in the mountain roads that is for sure...Good luck :D

This post is about 1/2 sleepers & 1/2 cars that the entire world knows are fast & souped up.
So far the sleepers are:
-300c
-Ford station wagon
-WRX (wagon only) Non Wagons & STi's are not sleepers, unless the STi is de-badged & dewinged
-That Black Buick Regal the plain one
-Some of the pickups
-Volvo Wagon
-The new ultimate sleeper...
A de winged & de badged Evo X. There is very that tells you that car is a beast, add 2 k & you have a monster.
Stangs, Camaros, muscle cars, Grand Nationals, vetts, Cyclones, Typhoons & even SS's aren't sleepers.
Note:
The 86-87 Buick T-Type is a sleeper. The best one ever. It's a Grand National without the wheels & ectra body stuff. My buddie has a two toned grey/white one with old lady vinyl roof... 11.1sec 1/4
