I have a question here and anyone who understands the boat manufacturing process would help.
We have a boat that is being built, it just came out of the mold last week. Went to go check on it yesterday and discovered that they cut the open bow area to large, the boat is a mid cuddy and we specified that we wanted a larger mid cuddy, smaller open bow.
Obviously, the cuts were wrong so now they are extending the cuddy.
They removed the bulkhead, and are adding a 9" piece of fiberglass (what was cut from the bow area) to the top of the deck. They are glassing that in and will not show a seam (I hope).
They had just put the deck (flooring) in and will now have to cut it back 12" to accomdate the larger cuddy. My biggest concern is the top 9" piece, will it be strong and never show any stress cracks in a few years, not to mention the overall structural integrity. My question here is, would you let them do this or just build you a new boat? any input would be great.

If it was me.....and I ordered specifics that were not followed, I would have them re-do it the way it was ordered. I would never pay for a hack job that I might be bringing back again and again for repairs because the builder screwed up. Why should you have to live with that if they messed up? Just my opinion.

Awwww hell no.....
That mid cabin piece handles a lot of stress.
Plus you're paying for a boat built right the first time, not patched together after it's ****ed up.

Tell them to start over. You don't want it pieced together.

Start Over : And then thank them for causing you to miss any chance of boating this summer because they were careless.

I would have a new hull layed up, but you may want to rethink your graphics. The reason I say this is because they will not trash that hull they will sell it to somebody else that comes in the door.

If it aint what I ordered and I was not happy with it I'd make them do a whole new hull or I'd walk away.....It's times like these that separate the decent builders from the excellent builders...

Fiberglass is strong stuff. As long as they are a reputable builder and they are willing to warranty the work they are doing for an extended perios(against stress cracks) then Id be okay with it.

I concur absolutly have them build a new one. I have a friend that built a boat he wasn't happy with the gel on the deck and he had them build the deck 3 times before he was happy. With the prices of boats today I would want exactly what I was paying for nothing more and nothing less.

I agree. I have seen many repairs hold up with NO problems. Just amke sure they warranty it.

I would definitley change it up. That graphic actually has been used many of times. Blue has been the popular color. Nice graphics, but change it up so you have an original of your own. Good luck. It will all work out.:)

New hull. You will always know that it's there and it will bug the $hit out of you. If done right there shouldn't be a problem but the possibility exists and you have paid a lot of money for this thing. Technically they could just shoot a new deck as it is a seperate mold but they will have to match the gel perfect to the bottom or it will bug you too if it is even slightly off. Same problem with just the patch. Will have to be a perfect gel match. Tell them you want a new hull or you want your deposit back and pound sand. $hit happens with boats and little things can be fixed no problem, especially if you have a reputable builder with good service. But they screwed up and want to mickey mouse fix it at your mental expense. I wouldn't want the boat that way unless they marked it down 50%. Even then I'd have to think about it.

I should add it is a very reputable builder, in fact when I was reasearching boats I could not find anyone to say one bad thing about this builder.
The offer is out there to build me a new one, they assure me that this fix will not compromise the boats integrity or they would not do it. I have to agree that with this much money $$$$ (the most we have ever spent on a boat)
it makes us uneasy.....

That's just the thing it's a repair. And a major one at that. Would you be okay paying full price for a new truck that had a steel beam dropped on the bed and instead of replacing the bed with a new one they straightened it out and bondo'd it up and such? I'd think you'd want a new truck, new bed or a mighty hefty discount. An air bubble or something like that in the gel is one thing. They are tiny and happen frequently. This is a big booboo and they want to put a band aid on it and charge him full pop.

Lavey does build a great boat and has a great reputation. Mistakes happen. The repair will probably be flawless but as you say it makes you uneasy. I'm sure you are somewhere around 100k for that boat. That is alot of money to be feeling uneasy. If the offer is there to build a new one then take it. There are plenty of folks around here to give you a ride at the river this season and you will be all set for next year.

I agree with everything Shippinguy said, and if they are offering to build a new deck or whole boat, I would take it! Just remember, eventually you will see that boat on the water, so change your graphics!
