Alright I'm impressed. Can anyone tell me what it would take to write the program to do that? Would the program be anything like a chess playing program or a different animal altogether?

Amazing.
Solving the Rubik's Cube puzzle takes a series of specific steps and turns to solve. No matter what the original configuration is, a specific set of up to 41 turns can solve the puzzle.

Although, making a machine to do it is pretty impresssive.

watch the person's hands - their movement doesn't look natural, like maybe it's filmed and then played in reverse.
i saw another video like this where the solved puzzle was given to someone who mixed it all up with their feet. played backwards it appeared to be them solving it.

I got so frustrated trying to do the Cube when it first came out, I ended up peeling off the stickers and putting them back on the right sides.

That's cool. Probably solved the cube in a second and took the rest of the time to actuate the mechanism.
On the other hand, If not for that clip, I wouldn't have seen this...
Now this is incredible...
