71.4 with a stock pump at 6200rpms:jawdrop:
Is that to high?
Will a shoe and ride plate, droop and diverter bring that down some?
Or do I need a new inpeller?
What should I run.
Its a 1981 18ft Crusader (splash of southwind) with a 468 and berkeley 12JG.

what impeller do you have.tes imo thats way to high rpm for the speed you were running, have you verified if the tach is 100 percent on the money, might look into that first.if so then i would be looking into the pump.was it cavitating any at all:confused: any funny things going on.

Funny thing is. It doesnt cavitate at all. You can stand on it from a dead stop. And it just takes off. The inpeller looks good from under the boat. No chunks nmissing. The leading edge is in good shape.
Im not sure about the tach. or the inpeller size.

My Southwind is a 78 with a 468 BBC and I am running about 76 MPH @ 5100 RPM's with a Berkeley A. I am guessing that the HP is a little less than 500. I would check the tach like said and call the old owner and ask him what size impeller he put in the boat. I would also ask him for the engine details and go from there.

1st check the tac... then check the gap on the impeller...

Could be right if the impeller is small...need more info though...

It could be a worn out "B". I have the same hull. 78 MPH with Mag-bronze Agressor "B" turning 5800.
Going to test with the new Stainless "B" done by Jack next weekend! :D

Well the tach was set on number 3 on the back. So i moved it to 4 and we will see tomorrow what the new rpms are.

If you know what brand and model of tach it is, it's likely that someone on the boards, or one of the many parts retailers could positively identify which setting the tach should be in with a V8. If you don't know the make/model, post up a pic and you still might get some info.

Wow, I have 25mph on that turning 5900-6000rpm on a stainless Berk B with 700+ HP.
I would certainly check the tach, and then check the pump.
Hope it is just the tach.

But what if it were a "C" or "C/D"??

Figure 300-400 rpm for each full impellar change (a to B) etc.
Something is still wrong. Like Randy said, he has 25mph on ya and spinning less RPM with a "B". If not tach, your pump will need gone through.

Heres the results.
I had a good friend take a look at it yesterday.
Tach is 700 rpms off at 3500. So roughly 1000rpms off at 6200.
Timing was only at 25 total degress advanced. So we moved it up to 36. And richened up the carbs some.
It was hard to start before. Especialy if it sat all week. Now it fires right up. I cant wait to take her out on friday.
