Alright, every time I go out it seems like something new breaks on my machine. I don't know how you guys in the boating business deal with this crap..........for example my simple problem turned big problem as follows:
Out on Saturday on a rough reservoir in my small 19' Elim Daytona. Find a cove and stay out of the way for most of the day. At the end of the day we go bouncing all over and then find a sand bar to hang out at for a few more. I am looking things over and notice a 2 inch by 7 1/2 inch by 1/2 inch thick plate not in the correct postion, located at the bottom of my motor bracket assembly and sticking out. Two bolts screw up through the plate into the motor bracket, one on each side and apparently one bolt came loose and fell out letting the metal plate pivot on the other bolt. When I got home, I figured I would take the other bolt out, and put lock tite on it and put it in as well as a new one. When taking the remaining bolt out, it snapped leaving most of the rest of the bolt in the bracket. Tried vice grips to get the rest of the bolt out and it would not budge. http://free.***boat.net/ubb/mad.gif
Question.........what is this plate used for? It goes from one side of the bracket to the other across the very bottom portion of the bracket assembly. The bottom of the plate almost looks like a honey comb type grid pattern, the top is flush.
Can I run the boat without the plate? I think I can as I do not see what this plate does? It doesn't look as though it holds anything together.
Last but not least.....if I can run the boat the rest of the summer without this plate, how does one properly fix the bolt that snapped (during the off season)? My guess is that the bracket needs to come off, be turned upside down and have the bolt drilled out then re-threaded for the next size up bolt? Correct? What tools are needed to do this? Drill press and threading tool? By the way, this is a Mercury 2.4L V-6 O/B. Thanks.

I know what ya mean! Its always something. I just heard from DCB that the Lavey I sold blew the 2.5 apart. That really sucks! 7-10 grand worth I hear. They are money pits!

Could it be a anti corrosion anode ? Is it painted? It should'nt be. If it is I would fix it over the winter. If your boat don't sit in the water more than a few days at a time i would'nt worry about it.

Thank you.........that is exactly what one of my friends told me. Turns out that the piece is painted, but the paint is chipping off. The motor has been repainted, it could have been painted on accident then. I will try to post a picture of it tomorrow. Thanks.

Okay, I posted some pics. Is this the anti corrosion anode or something else? Thanks in advance for the help! http://free.***boat.net/ubb/smile.gif

yes it is. Clean all the paint off of it and make sure you get good contact to the motor. check it with a meter and your set to go.
