Need some help on this one... 1987 Merc 35 HP Outboard. Wont idle under 1500 - 1700 RPM. When I disconnect the fuel line, it will idle perfectly untill the carb bowl runs out of fuel. I bypassed my fuel system with a neighbors fuel tank...same problem. I put in a new needle and seat...same problem. Does the fuel pump have any high pressure shut off capabilities or is that the job of the needle and seat? Any suggestions?

If it runs fine when you unplug the gas line, I would think it would be a problem with your fuel pump regulator. Either too much, or to little pressure. Do you have a regulator, and/or a fuel PSI guage to determine what PSI the pump is putting out?

Its just a simple vacuum operated fuel pump. I don't think there is any regulator. I guess a rebuild kit can't cost that much. I think I will try that next...
Thanks...

If its a vacum type pump detatch it from the motor but leave all the fuel lines on , pump the primer ball and if gas shoots out the hole on the pump that picks up the vacun signal the diaghram is bad .Probably whats wrong and easy to fix ! NG

If it is let me know the sr# of motor and I can hook you up with a part # to order from a NAPA autoparts store , probably save a buck or two. NG

No prob , FYI -marine parts from NAPA are sierra , just a little cheaper most often (especially if your buddy owns the store! wink )NG

Check the vacum line! and the both orfis's where it connects. They can get gummed up and stop vac!
